Too Late: Definitive Edition

The instant #1 New York Times and USA Today bestseller, a story about a woman caught in a dangerous web of obsessive love, trying to find a way out before it's too late... this new, updated edition is a "barn-burner" (New York Post) and Colleen Hoover's darkest romantic thriller since Verity.

Sloan will go through hell and back for those she loves. And she does so, every single day. Caught up with the alluring Asa Jackson, a notorious drug trafficker, Sloan has finally found a lifeline to cling to, even if it's meant compromising her morals. She was in dire straits trying to pay for her brother's care until she met Asa. But as Sloan became emotionally and economically reliant on him, he in turn developed a disturbing obsession with her--one that becomes increasingly dangerous every day.

When undercover DEA agent Carter enters the picture, Sloan's surprised to feel an immediate attraction between them, despite knowing that if Asa finds out, he will kill him. And Asa has always been a step ahead of everyone in his life, including Sloan. No one has ever gotten in his way.

No one except Carter.

Together, Sloan and Carter must find a way out before it's too late...

I could see why some people wouldn’t enjoy this book, but if I’m being honest, I was hooked! I haven’t read any CoHo since I really got back into reading. Nothing against her books because frankly I’ve enjoyed every one I’ve read but I’ve just been exploring other authors and types of books. Which is why I wanted to try this one out. I felt like it was more “Verity” CoHo and I really enjoyed that one so I gave it a try. I also decided to read it in audio format. I thought it would give me something different and I will admit I thouroughly enjoyed it this way. There were three narrators (loved this And they were all amazing) so it gave a great dynamic to the multiple POVS. I thought the story was suspenseful and thrilling. I didn’t know what was going to happen next and it had me dying to continue reading. I did really enjoy it but there was still a little something I can’t fully describe that keeps me from saying this was a perfect read for me.

I have thoughts.

My first introduction to Colleen Hoover was Verity. I went in blind and thinking that it was going to be a romance. I was very, very wrong. However, I enjoyed Verity. I believe I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars. When I give any book a 4-star rating, I am usually more willing to give the author another chance. In fact, I'm more likely to give that author multiple chances. So, I picked up a book by Hoover called Confess, and it was a DNF approximately 20-something percent in. Not for me. I picked up a third not too long after that DNF (a book I can't even remember the name of now), and it was another one I didn't bother to finish.

Me=Dang!

Some time passed, and I gave another book a try - Slammed. I was able to finish it, but it was a big no for me. I rated it 2 stars.

You would think I would have learned my lesson. But Cathy - with an unhealthy addiction to buying books - had not one, not two, but three other physical copies of Colleen Hoover's books sitting in the piles.

So, Too Late? I finished it. I'm pretty sure I was hate-reading the entire time. It wasn't the worst thing that I've ever read (I reserve one star for that), but it wasn't the greatest for me. And here is a list of my issues with this book in particular.

Potential Spoilers Ahead!

1. I would never trust Luke/Carter to go undercover for any reason or trust him with my safety. That man would get me killed. You're risking an entire investigation and being weird in front of a supposedly dangerous drug dealer because you caught feelings for someone you barely even knew? A person who happens to be intimately involved with said dangerous drug dealer? Dude, you can't be my friend. Imma need them to bring someone level-headed in this b*tch to get this job done. All you had to do was not be weird about it, not to act suspicious.

2. Sloane. Sloane. Hi, Sloane. I wanted to like you because you seemed to have it rough for, like, your entire life, going from one bad situation to another. However, your creator deemed it necessary to have you figure out that Luke/Carter is working undercover without any solid evidence to back that up. Granted, Luke/Carter is bad at his job. I'll give you that! For the story's sake, though, it shouldn't have been handed to you so easily. What? He says a few things that seem a little strange, which immediately equates to "undercover cop"? Where was the highway exit on that one? And then....and THEN. You have been pretending with your drug dealer, abusive boyfriend for two years, making him believe you loved him because you believed he was taking care of your brother's medical bills and the facility he's in. Two years! Then, suddenly, you forget how to lie when it comes to Carter/Luke? You don't know how to pretend that you don't want him? You're constantly worried about Asa (drug dealer) finding out, seeing something on your face? Girrrrrrrrrrrrl. You can't be my friend either.

3. Asa, the drug dealer. Did we really need his point of view? The answer is no. No, we didn't need it. I'm having a hard time believing you are capable of what this book tells me you're capable of, Asa. Forging official documents. Being able to hide the fact that you cheat on Sloane. Being able to concoct a fake raid just to see if any of the people working for you are cops (Luke/Carter is really bad at his job). Knowing how to get an ankle monitor off. Yeah, I don't buy it, Asa. Your creator didn't supply me with enough information or character to believe you'd be some mastermind that magically evades the law repeatedly. Why are you here? Why am I seeing your point of view? You, too, can't be my friend.

4. Time progression. Either my sense of time is completely out of whack, or I'm running into many books where the authors aren't very convincing regarding the passage of time. Events started unfolding, and I kept thinking I was in the same week, only to find that I was apparently not in the same week at all. Does the calendar spring forward, too?

So here it is. I am going to unhaul this book, but I still have It Ends With Us and Ugly Love sitting on my shelves.

Do I unhaul those books as well, or do I keep giving Hoover a chance?
