Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, Book 5)

Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, never knows what the day—or night—may bring. But in the fifth novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, she's about to learn that while some secrets are dangerous—those who seek them are just plain deadly…

Mercy is smart enough to realize that when it comes to the magical Fae, the less you know, the better. But you can’t always get what you want. When she attempts to return a powerful Fae book she’d previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.

It seems the book contains secret knowledge—and the Fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn’t take enough of Mercy’s attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side—leaving Mercy to cover for him, lest his own father declare Sam’s life forfeit.

All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn’t careful, she might not have many more to live...

As I’m reading this series, I’m finding the plot fairly formulaic, however, in Silver Borne the pros outweigh the cons of in its outline, and it’s possibly my favourite of the series thus far.

We know Mercy has a pretty strained relationship with the pack, but this time the curtain is lifted on Pack dynamics, as Mercy comes to terms with not only being Adam’s mate, but part of the pack itself. I enjoyed the deeper dive into the pack, especially how self-sufficient Mercy must come to grips relying on others.

As usual, Mercy gets in a jam way above her pay grade (chaos magnet that she is) and she must dig herself out without too much collateral damage. Big bad this time goes back to the fae, while Mercy deals with trust issues surrounding her relationships with both Adam & Sam.

Since book one of the Mercy Thompson series I found that Silver Bourne brought back the same adrenaline rush and intensity that made me fall in love in the first place. While I have enjoyed the other books, I found book 5 gives the readers the original Mercy back since the “incident” and gives us more insight into the pack. Likewise, I really enjoyed seeing the relationship between Mercy and Samuel as he struggles with himself and his wolf. Before it was always the back and forth between Adam and Samuel in the foreground of the story. Plus we were given a glimpse into a new era for Samuel’s character with the arrival of someone from his past.

Amazing!

Yet another fantastic installment in the Mercy Thompson series and I can't wait to start the next one. For a series that started out as a recommendation for my book club this quickly turned into one of my favorite series. If you have made it this far in the series then you will know what I mean!
