Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, Book 1)

THE FIRST MERCY THOMPSON NOVEL!
Moon Called is the novel that introduced Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson to the world and launched a #1 bestselling phenomenon...
Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.
But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he’s a newly changed werewolf—on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.
But Mercy’s act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her...
“In the increasingly crowded field of kick-ass supernatural heroines, Mercy stands out as one of the best.”—Locus

Readers say *Moon Called* by Patricia Briggs offers a strong urban fantasy with a compelling lead, Mercy Thompson, who is smart, spunky, and relatable...
Totally not what I expected based on the description and cover art -- but in a good way. The narrator isn't at all like the trendy urban chick depicted on the cover for this and the subsequent sequels. She's much more real, down to earth, and likeable, even if she does have the rather unlikely ability to shift into a coyote! Her world is populated with some familiar fantasy creatures, but they're made more interesting by also being (mostly) human in a recognizably human world. Not literary by any means, but pretty compelling and enjoyable to listen to. (Listened to audiobook version.)
The book Moon Called was a fast pace urban fantasy adventure! this was my first book Into the urban fantasy world that I can think of offhand (unless you call the Dresden Files urban fantasy but I consider that an urban mystery. )
The dynamic and clear power Mercy brings to the story was enchanting. As a lone shifter/ coyote in this world of werewolves, Faye and vampires she is a force to be reckoned with.
Her relaxed personality and her (mostly) unbiased voice gives clarity and empathy to all of the main and side characters in this semi-secret fantasy and magic filled world.
Readers will feel what Mercy feels and discover each new development as she does with the direct openness of the narrative as it follows the appearance of this mystery boy, Mack, who comes into her repair shop looking for a job leading to this nearly all out war between two very large, powerful Werewolf packs— and the life of a young teenage girl also tied up in the middle of it all.
I’m not always a fan of first person perspective when it comes to books, but the transparency and objectiveness that Mercy’s perspective gives the story will have all readers enthralled and obsessed from start to finish.
The story encompasses all of the activity within a week’s time from the start to finish of book one in this series and as soon as I finished it I was ready to know more!
I wanted to see what Mercy was up to next, I wanted to see how samuel was adapting to his new life going into this new area of territory he decided to go into; I wanted to see how Adam was adjusting to things with this new wolf in the territory.
I wanted to see more about the other Faye/ mystical/paranormal beings that were in Mercy’s world and I wanted to see Mercy find out more about her background and her abilities that are unknown to her (still) at this point in her life.
Overall,I think this book is wonderful; I have high hopes for the rest of the series lol so I’m hoping all the other books are as good as book one. If you have not read Moon Called yet, readers it is not one to miss.
Patricia Briggs’ Moon Called is a standout in urban fantasy, not just for its gripping plot and supernatural world-building, but for its layered portrayal of identity. Mercy Thompson, the protagonist, is a shapeshifter and mechanic with a complex heritage—including Native American roots—that adds depth to her character.
What I especially appreciated was how Briggs keeps Mercy’s Native American connection grounded and respectful. Mercy doesn’t claim deep knowledge of her heritage; she’s aware that her worldview is shaped more by her white upbringing and her experiences with the wolf pack than by Indigenous traditions. This self-awareness makes her portrayal feel honest and avoids romanticizing or appropriating Native identity. It’s a subtle but powerful way to acknowledge cultural complexity without overstepping.
The story itself is fast-paced and full of intrigue, with werewolves, vampires, and fae all playing roles in a mystery that Mercy must unravel. But it’s Mercy’s voice—strong, smart, and quietly reflective—that makes this book unforgettable.
I’d recommend Moon Called to fans of urban fantasy who appreciate strong female leads and stories that thoughtfully engage with cultural identity.
Alright so when I finally put myself to reading this book, I had finished it in a couple hours. I’ve been craving something like this for a while. I do love urban fantasy, easily my favorite genre. But normally the female lead ones fall too far into paranormal romance for my comfort. This one didn’t. Sure, mercy has a love interest. But it doesn’t take away from her sarcastic, energetic, spunky character. Can’t wait to get on the rest of the series.
I really dove into this book. I couldn’t sleep the past night so I picked up the book and before I knew it was 1 in the morning and I finished like 75% of the book. Mercy is a driven woman who doesn’t care what they think of her. She won’t let a man over power her and tell her to back off. A little triangle is happening.
