I don't love when authors blend the miscommunication trope with a love triangle. It is messy in, not a fun way and it takes away from the plot. This book is slower than Shadow and Bone, we aren't even going to compare it to the pacing of Six of Crows. It does push the plot along. Even though I spent half the time rolling my eyes at Alaina's inner monologues (grow up girl). My heart breaks for Mal, his roll in is painful to read.

Not loving the main character. Why doesn't she just tell the person she supposedly loves the truth?!

I initially expected this book to be less impressive than the first, but I’m glad it wasn’t. The plot, along with the build-up of drama and tension, were significant highlights. In the first book, the Darkling made me cringe every time he was mentioned. His narcissism and love-bombing were pretty obvious, and of course, Alina missed all the red flags because he was good-looking—until it was way too late This time, I was pleased that he didn’t dominate the book with unnecessary pretenses and got straight to his villainous business making the rot beneath all the 'beauty’ unmissably clear. Tamar and Toyla were excellent new additions, and even some of the minor characters were developed enough to be memorable. Nikolai brought a fresh and funny energy, providing much-needed relief during the darker moments. Alina, with her newfound confidence, agency, and voice, was delightfully likable. Mal finally got the character development he deserved! His sulking and sadness felt real and relatable, showing how people might really react in those situations. Honestly, if all leading guys were charming, funny, and handsome—or the opposite, quiet, mysterious, self-assured, powerful types like Mr. Darcy (or The Darkling in the first book) —I would have found the book insufferable and tropey. Thankfully, this wasn’t one of those.

This second book got so much more interesting! I love the amount of action in this one and it started right away. The darkling gives me the creeps but somehow I still wish he was the morally grey love interest (haha). Mal pissed me off about 98% of the time but Alina was a bit obnoxious too. I understand where both of their feelings come from but she isn’t normal, never will be and frankly never was so I don’t know why either of them keep denying it. She has Grisha power, they need to accept that for what it is. Something I noticed in the first book as well was how quickly the “big” things happen. I feel like the whole book is a build up to the last chapter and the climax all happens in a few pages. But I loved how both books ended on a cliffhanger. Keeps me wanting more and ready to dive into the rest of the series. OVerall still hooked on this trilogy and can’t wait to get into the last one!
