Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone. . . .

A spy known as the Wraith.

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don't kill each other first.

For the first 1/4 of this book I was annoyed by it. By the end, it had won me over. Yes, it has some flaws. The characters all have the swagger of a teenager and the wisdom of an elder. Kaz is an irritating jerk (I rarely find "gruff and withholding twerp" to be a compelling basis for a character). The POV chapters often contribute only a camera angle, rather than providing any new insight into whose eyes we're seeing through, or giving us new glimpses of their interiority or personality or what makes them tick. And the plot relies pretty heavily on winky reveals where any peril is handwaved away by some flourish that seems to come out of nowhere. But damn it, I came to love this little band of misfits and rogues and broken people. Bardugo has a real talent for weaving tragedy into a backstory, and learning how this group all got to where we joined them came with plenty of rich story. I was skeptical, but count me in. Can't wait to tackle the sequel and see where they all go next.

Really enjoyed this!!

Just a pretty important dialogue towards the end where a character just made absolutely no sense ?? I'll have to see in crooked kingdom i guess

(Also kaz has a weird vibe as a character idk how to explain it like he feels not that well fleshed out ? Like made so into a legend throughout the boon its hard to humanize him idk might be me)
