This is a series I’ve been itching to get into for awhile and it did not disappoint! Every time I get into a new fantasy series I am reminded of why I love them so much. We get to escape into this other world with different world dynamics and magic and mystery and a sprinkle of romance. I love a good FMC and alina fit the mold of what I love. She’s perceived as mousey and weak but as she learns who she is you see her grow and become stronger and stronger... I ate it up! The romance aspect was the piece I wasn’t sure what to expect and it really wasn’t super prevalent in this book but I think it will grow throughout the trilogy. I got a mixture of hunger games and throne of glass vibes so it was very easy for me to enjoy. I cannot wait to start book 2!
It was okay I won't be buying the second one. I prefer the villian over the male lead which makes it a bit hard. I don't love the 'he didn't make a move until she had a glow up' bit. Like I know the antagonist is evil but I still prefer him.
This is my first exposure to Leigh Bardugo’s work and I AM A FAN! I devoured this book. Contemplating binging the whole dang trilogy right now. Sure, it’s YA and on the simpler side of fantasy, but that’s what makes it so perfect. I can slide one of these in between my dense or complex fantasy/sci fi reads and keep things fresh and fun.
Except I might not be able to wait to space them out as palette cleaners because I really just want to read them all.
Like right now.

Loved this book! I will definitely be reading more of Leigh Bardugo’s series. Really liked how this book didn’t do a whole lot of backstory and got straight to the point, not too much world building either (I hate that part). World wasn’t too complex and difficult to understand, and I was still so immersed in the scenes and the details. Now for book 2!
I LOVED this book. I was bamboozled. Aside from that, it was just the right amount of dipping your toes into the world. But still leaves you with so many questions. I am very excited to continue this series.
