Keep It in the Family

In this thrilling novel from bestselling author John Marrs, a young couple's house hides terrible secrets--and not all of them are confined to the past.

Mia and Finn are busy turning a derelict house into their dream home when Mia unexpectedly falls pregnant. But just when they think the house is ready, Mia discovers a shocking message scored into a skirting board: I WILL SAVE THEM FROM THE ATTIC. Following the clue up into the eaves, the couple make a gruesome discovery: their home was once a real-life murder house, with the evidence still concealed within the four walls.

In the wake of their traumatic discovery, the baby arrives and Mia can't shake her fixation with the monstrous crimes that happened right above them. Tormented by the terrible things she saw, she is desperate to dig into the past to find answers.

Secrecy shrouds the mystery of the attic, but when shards of a dark truth start to emerge, Mia realises the danger is terrifyingly present. She is prepared to do anything to protect her family--but will the previous tenants stop her from discovering their secret?

I have to admit the beginning was a slog for me. I wasn't sure if I'd even finish the book just because all the characters were unlikeable and annoying from the start, and nothing interesting was really happening at first. However, once the suspense and mystery really kicked off for me (around chap 7), we were off to the races - I couldn't put this down! Every chance I got I read this book.

It felt like each chapter has either some kind of crazy twist or something really messy happening, which had me hooked and hungry for the next one. The cliffhangers were almost too sensational at times but they kept me entertained. I will say though, it was more dark than I anticipated despite having it's dramatic moments. I guess I'll add the TW now: murder, child abuse.

The multiple 1st person perspectives took some getting used to at first but then it grew on me and I enjoyed jumping from character to character. I also think the writer did a good job at painting toxic family dynamics, deep-rooted dishonesty, and the consequences of blind loyalty. I would recommend this book to people looking for an addictive, drama-filled whodunit. You'll fly through it and likely be saying "Oh shit" every other chapter. Definitely an enjoyable mystery - but again, very dark. May not be for everyone.

P.S. Going back to re-read chapter 9 after you've finished the book is extra disturbing and gross

Started slow, got really complicated, got annoying, got interesting, lost steam, ended annoyingly. The ending reminded me of that Criminal Minds episode where the guy and his wife work to murder other families and kidnap the little girls for their son to marry and then have kids to do it all again. The end of that is very similar to the end of this. I have questions and want to talk about it. The more I think back on it, the less I liked it.
