The Passengers

You're riding in your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock, the route changes and you have lost all control. Then, a mysterious voice tells you, "You are going to die."

Just as self-driving cars become the trusted, safer norm, eight people find themselves in this terrifying situation, including a faded TV star, a pregnant young woman, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an undocumented immigrant, a husband and wife, and a suicidal man.

From cameras hidden in their cars, their panic is broadcast to millions of people around the world. But the public will show their true colors when they are asked, "Which of these people should we save?...And who should we kill first?"

I recently became a fan of John Mars after seeing his name mentioned over and over in a Facebook group. The plot was so interesting and timely as we’re seeing more driverless vehicles on the roads these days. I love books that leave you wondering, “what if this really happens?”

Really enjoyed this, and the multiple narrators and dramatization of the audiobook only added to how much I liked this. Hearing the same character being delivered in multiple voices was as confusing as it was interesting though.

The premise is unlike anything I've read recently, so it was a breath of fresh air and completely unexpected. The way information and titbits about the world and the plot outside of the primary narrative were divulged to readers intermittently via 'news posts,' 'social media' and 'websites' was a touch that I liked- I had a peek at the print version of this, and a lot of work went into the look and style of that.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a fast narrative, a dystopian concept, and a dark twist to the plot and characters. Please do check content warnings before reading!

Despite really disappointing Part 3, I still have to give this book a 5 star. READ IT! READ IT!
