A haunting and quietly powerful novel I immersed myself in this remarkable book, captivating readers from the beginning. While the description may imply a brutally sadistic tale, that is untrue. It is a poignant exploration of the human experience, especially when everything we hold dear is taken away. The writing is beautifully crafted and flows effortlessly, leaving a lasting impression long after you turn the final page. It touched my heart and left me yearning for more.

“My memory begins with anger.”

What does it mean to be human in a world where you’ve been deprived of what connects us most to humanity? In “I Who Have Never Known Men”, an unnamed narrator walks alongside this question as she emerges from the underground prison in which she has spent her entire life.

I was largely inspired by social media to read this book, and I’m glad that I did—it inspired many thoughts and questions that I’m still grappling with. I did enjoy the earlier chapters (which reminded me on “Piranesi”) more than the latter part of the narrative, but overall this will be a book I won’t soon forget.

I went into this book fairly blind, and I am so glad that I did. I’ve heard a lot of great things about it, but never really paid attention to what the story was about. When I saw a hardback edition while at an event recently, I snagged it, it's beautiful! Reader be warned, there are no chapters, the story just goes on and on... as it should. This story played out like a movie. The MC, whose name will never be known, grows before your eyes from a young teen to her mid-40's experiencing so much, but also so little. Some scenes were explained so perfectly, many like a carefully planned images that will stick with me for a long time. I have so many unanswered questions, but so did every character in the book. This is an absolute must read... so different from anything I've ever read. So deep, so touching, so gut-wrenching, but beautiful. I definitely recommend!
