Slow. Sooo many unnecessary details, background, conversations, I skimmed probably 70% of the book. The only clue was that what they were assuming was too obvious.

I think this will entertain someone new to thrillers, or a young adult reader, and there was a twist... so... a weak 6. I didn't loathe it. Definitely didn't love it. This was my first Jeneva Rose book. I have The Perfect Marriage on standby in the physical TBR, but it's definitely been pushed a little further back after this read. I really wanted to love this book. Murders and mysteries and missing persons with big stuff happening in the Summer of 1999... the same summer I graduated high school (don't you eyeball me, youngin'!) led to some great references. Short chapters too, always a plus for me. And the cover... chef's kiss - the inside hard cover as well as the dust jacket - both were stunning! But... it kind of stopped there. I won't lie and say "I knew the twist!", because I'm terrible at guessing twists. However, I was damn close... at page, like, 8. I don't think I liked a single character, and their actions weren't even questionable, just downright stupid. Honestly, this felt like YA, like I was back in 6th grade reading Christopher Pike. Wait... is this a YA? ::checks real quick:: Nope. I really enjoyed the Acknowledgments section and also think the author is hilarious, so I have hope that maybe a different type of book from her will have more positive results for me. But this was just.. meh.
