I listened to the first five books in the Mercy Thompson series in a relatively short period because I so enjoyed being in her world, but then I got to the sixth book and was so annoyed by it that I just told myself the series was over (and had ended with Book 5).

What I didn't like was the incredibly long and tiresome "battle scene" with the river monster, which was such a contrast to the lively interpersonal interactions and observations that characterize the rest of the series. I couldn't even really listen to the battle scene and paid only partial attention until it was over.

Fast forward a few years: when I came across the 7th and 8th books in the series, my first thought was that I was eager to return to Mercy's world, as I'd missed it. So I bought both of them and dived right into book 7.

At first I really enjoyed catching up with the characters and hearing about their interesting quirks (esp. the gay couple's home decorating choices!), but after a while I realized that I wasn't really learning anything new about the characters or their world, at least not at the level of the first few books. But if that had been my only complaint, I still would've given the book four stars.

What knocked the fourth star off is the same thing that frustrated me about the previous book: waaaay too much emphasis on the politics leading up to an epic battle, and then an endless battle scene that, again, I couldn't really listen to. By the end I was just glad it was over!

I'll give the 8th book a try, since I already bought it. But if I feel another epic battle coming on, I'm just going to stop right there.

A solid continuation of Mercy’s story, and this one starts with a bang right in chapter 1 - literally! A night of Black Friday shopping with Jesse takes a turn for the worse, and things pile on from there. Poor Mercy just cannot catch a break.

We also benefit, for the first time, with chapter POVs from our favourite Alpha, Adam! I found the differing dialogue a nice change of pace. We also get more page time with Tad in this novel, who’s really only been a minor character up until now.

Each book has placed Mercy in some pretty precarious situations, and while she’s always made it out in some miraculous fashion, we finally get to see Mercy exploring the depths of her own powers. I like how the “lucky coyote” was addressed, because it really is an unsustainable trope. Yes, she hasn’t come out unscathed, but she ALWAYS comes out in the end. I’m excited to see where she goes from here!

Liked getting to know Zee's son more and having a peak into the world of after the Fae denounced themselves from the human world. I did feel like there were token characters in the narrative that weren't necessary to be there.
