House of the Dragon meets From Blood and Ash in this epic, scorching dark romantasy.

A conqueror captivated…
A witch prophesied to save them all…
An unforgiving world where dragons rule Rome.

Julian Dakkia, Roman general and nephew to the emperor, has played his role as conqueror well. Yet, the moment he laid eyes on Malina, he was enthralled by the Dacian dancer. Years later, the fierce beauty stands before him, a captive on a scarred battlefield, her life in danger. He instinctively shifts into his fierce dragon form to save her, an action that may mean his head on the imperial gate.

The rules of their world dictate that he is the conqueror and she is the captured. But he and his dragon know one thing: their bond has nothing to do with the laws of mighty Rome. She belongs to them. And they belong to her.

Fierce and powerful, twenty-one-year old Malina has survived the loss of her family and she is determined to fight until her dying breath. Still, she can’t believe that the centurion who had once bestowed a secret talisman on her is the Roman general of legendary brutality…and now holds her life in his hands. Nor can she deny how her soul has always seemed to answer his. Slowly she learns that Julian is caught in his mad uncle’s machinations for domination, and helps him plot the downfall of the empire itself.

As they navigate a world where flying deathriders conquer and burn, their love will ignite a firestorm that can only end in heartbreak or death. Or both.

Firebird is an adult romantasy novel that contains dark themes, including slavery in Ancient Rome, which may be uncomfortable for some readers.

Firebird takes the familiar dragon romantasy formula and gives it a distinctly Roman twist. Juliette Cross blends mythology, dragon shifters, political intrigue, and a forbidden romance into a story that kept me turning pages while never overwhelming me with endless world-building. Malina is a Dacian empath whose nervous disposition makes perfect sense once her history begins to unfold. Julian, a Roman dragon general, could have easily become another possessive fantasy hero. What makes him work is his certainty. He never doubts what Malina means to him. The slow burn comes from Malina's hesitation, her fears, and the impossible positions they find themselves in. Fortunately, their personalities complement each other beautifully and Julian's confidence balances Malina's uncertainty. The master and slave dynamic initially gave me pause. I understood the practical reasons behind Julian's decision to claim Malina as his body slave. I found the resulting power imbalance impossible to ignore. I found myself thinking that their relationship often felt like an allegory for dominant and submissive dynamics. This mindset shift helped me better understand what the author was trying to accomplish. The master and slave dynamic will not work for every reader. I found it less uncomfortable than I expected because Julian consistently prioritizes Malina's safety, agency, and wellbeing within the limitations of their world. Their chemistry is undeniable. Cross excels at creating attraction that feels deeply tied to character rather than existing solely for spice. The physical relationship reflects who Julian and Malina are as people. Their intimate scenes reveal just as much about their emotional connection as their conversations do. One particular scene involving Julian's forked dragon tongue deserves its own fan club. I enjoyed how Cross incorporated elements of Roman history into the fantasy setting. The parallels between Julian and Julius Caesar certainly did not escape my notice. Court politics often test my patience, but in this story politics never overshadowed the romance. The political conflict serves the characters rather than the other way around. The writing occasionally felt uneven, but the strengths far outweighed those moments. The romance is compelling, the dragon mythology is fun, and the revolutionary plot provides enough external conflict to keep the story moving. By the final chapters, I was already looking forward to the sequel. I experienced Firebird as an immersion read alongside the audiobook and special edition. This turned out to be the perfect combination. The special edition is stunning and easily one of the most beautiful books on my shelf. I am already hoping the sequel receives the same treatment because they would look incredible displayed together. Kale Williams and Blair Dade delivered incredible performances in a dual narration format. I almost always prefer duet narration, so I approached this audiobook with some hesitation. Thankfully, both narrators are talented enough that the dual format never became distracting. Williams captures Julian's confidence and intensity perfectly. While Dade brings vulnerability and emotional depth to Malina. Their performances enhanced the romance and made the audiobook easy to sink into for hours at a time. Firebird is a great recommendation for readers who want dragons, fated mates, high-stakes romance, and political intrigue without getting buried beneath pages of fantasy lore. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the sequel and signing up for Juliette Cross's newsletter so I don't miss its release.

This book is very fast paced and I think has made a little too much that it's trying to do. It took me a bit separate what I know of Rome from this fantasy Rome. I did enjoy the story and the two main characters and of course dragons. I'm eager to see where it goes from here.
