About The MQRC (The Melanated Queers Reading Collective)
Our book club is a space for queer individuals from the Global Majority. The club covers discussions on books from different genres, with a focus on works by queer authors of color.
The club operates on a free membership model. We highly encourage supporting Housmans Bookshop, which generously offers a special discount on our monthly book club pick, however, we also strive to ensure accessibility. All our selected books will be curated with access on the library apps in mind, ensuring members have various ways of reading.
You can buy from Housmans here and use our special code: ilovebookclub to get 20% off!
Flexibility is key for us. There are no mandatory meeting requirements, and members are encouraged to participate at their own pace. Whether you've finished the book or not, we encourage you to attend club meetings regardless.
To enhance our club engagement, we utilize the Bookclubs app for community management, polls, and meeting information. Alternatively, you can also find information about each month's pick and meeting details on our Instagram.
Meetings generally run as a book club for 1 hour (7PM-8PM) with half an hour (8PM-8:30pm) to leisurely have tea and chat while we pack down chairs. Members who need to leave at 8PM are welcome to go during this time.
HOUSE RULES:
• Please respect that this space is specifically for people who identify as queer people from the Global Majority, please help us keep this space feeling safe by inviting others who do not identify this way.
• We would prefer if you could RSVP through the Outsavvy app/website. Links can be found in the details of each meeting. There are only so many chairs but if you are able to stand or floor sit, there is always space!
• If you cannot attend, please change your RSVP on the Outsavvy app us so we can keep track of numbers.
ACCESSIBILITY: The venue is on the ground floor. The entrance does have a small lip but we can assist anyone who may have trouble with this. Sadly, the toilets are only accessible via stairs.
