About Society for Cruel & Unusual Literature
Unconstrained by genre, good taste, or a sense of self-preservation, the Society for the Promotion of Cruel and Unusual Literature aims to throw itself against the jagged cliffs of Literature and to see what viscera sticks to the rocks.
The goal of the Society is to read and promote texts which are (1) belligerent, inimical, or minimally, resistant to the reader and/or the act of reading, AND which (2) achieve this effect through means that are structurally, philosophically, aesthetically, or spiritually interesting. Texts selected must meet both criteria; in the eyes of the Society, the only thing more distasteful than a prosaic but pleasant book is one whose cruelty is banal and unexciting.
The Society for the Promotion of Cruel and Unusual Literature meets semimonthly in an undisclosed location in Central New Jersey - virtual or distance members are also welcome.
