About Literary-ish LA: A Women's Book Club
About the club
Welcome to Literary-ish LA, a women’s book club originally founded in 2016 on Meetup as Literary South Bay. While a lot has changed since 2016, the club has always been about women coming together to discuss whatever books interest us. We welcome non-binary folks and trans-women to join our group and aim to be an inclusive club that fosters a safe environment for all of our members to feel welcome. If you are a crafter (knitting, crochet, etc.), we have hosted Craft & Chats in the past, so keep an eye out.
What do you read?
We’ve read our fair share of literary fiction, historical fiction, and a little bit of fantasy, sci-fi, and other genre fiction for good measure.
When do you meet?
We always meet on weekends, typically Saturdays at 2pm at local coffee shops. While you don’t have to buy a coffee, it would be nice to leave a small tip for the store if you don’t purchase anything.
How are books selected?
We try to select books at least 1-2 months in advance using polls with themes or specific prompts. Sometimes, book recommendations are requested on our messaging page.
Where do you get your books?
We love audiobooks around here and highly recommend Libby for free audiobooks and ebooks from your public library. (Tip- Look at our book selections and place holds early for popular books). Alternatively, consider using Libro FM or supporting local independent bookstores in the area.
Community Guidelines:
Please help us grow the community and maintain a positive, safe space for book lovers! :)
- Be kind and inclusive! Hate and self-promotion/selling will not be tolerated.
- Clarity is kindness, so please update your RSVP if your plans change for accurate numbers asap. (We've had events with 15 RSVPs and only 2 attendees, so please help us avoid this!)
- Please be diligent about marking dates in your phone or calendar system of choice. Check the location and date info for any updates before attending.
- No fake reading! That said, if you couldn’t read the book for any reason but still want to join us (totally fine), there will be spoilers.
- Expect disagreement. Be open to different perspectives on the book. There isn’t one “right” way to feel. It’s fun to hear different opinions. Try not to be hurt if the group hated the book you loved or the opposite. It happens to us all at some point!
