In Her Words

This book club is called In Her Words, and it is a space that I'm curating to intentionally and specifically uplift the voices of Black women. While not every book we read will be authored by a Black woman, elevating the conversation for and surrounding Black women (including ourselves) will remain the primary goal.

We will read one book per month as a group, and we will plan to meet twice a month. The mid-month meeting will be a silent book club. Here, we'll simply hang around and enjoy one another's company while decompressing and making progress in whatever book you're reading at the time. For our end-of-month meeting, we will discuss the book that we collectively read. 

This is meant to be a safe space for everyone included, specifically Black women, and this is our top priority. In order to protect this space, here are some guidelines that we are committing to follow by participating:

• Keep your language clean (I know we tend to get passionate about books and characters, but let's promote a comfortable atmosphere for everyone and be mindful of our speech.)
• No talking over one another (Everyone's thoughts are valuable and important. Let's respect one another by being willing to hear the entirety of each person's thought.)
• No demeaning one another's opinions (This would be boring if we all had the same opinions about what we're reading, so expression of differing opinions is highly encouraged. However, disrespect and condescension surrounding someone's opinion will not be tolerated.)
• 80/20 rule (While this is a book club, this is a also a social space for community building. Let's do our best to keep MOST of our convos about reading.)
• Respect your own and each others limits (I will do my best to broadcast trigger warnings with each book that we read. With that being said be kind to yourself and to others in this regard.)
• Participate! (This is our book club! Yes, I want you to participate in group discussions, but I also want you to participate in helping pick out the books we read, the snacks we have, and the places we meet. Help me make this a space where excited to be!)
