Okay, I feel very voyeuristic, as I just crept onto someone’s instant messages and followed the string of IMessages between three (3) 10th graders school girls. Ahhh, the angst, the drama, the crushes, trying to fit in and knowing who your true blue friends are. I remember those days and thankfully, they are long past me. However reading this epistolary novel, it takes me back to those less than fonder memories. Of course, this one includes a portion of pedophilia, drinking, cyber-bullying, and nudity. Things, thankfully, I never experienced. This book is taken to a new level for me but might be more relevant now since I am way, way older than 10th graders.

This novel revolves around 3 girls: Mad Maddie (Madelyn Kinnick - has the bold text) who seems to always have the perfected scowl and “don’t give a fig newton” attitude which is to truly hide her vulnerability; SnowAngel (Angela Silver - has an Iphone or something Apple because her texts are blue.) who seems to have found her true love as many times as Johnny Depp has been engaged - this time with Rob and later Ben, and finally Zoegirl (Zoe Barrett) who is pure and sweet and getting spiritual. Three friends who go through thick and thin together and promise their eternal loyalty. We find their friendships with each other tested when they deal with each other’s problems: Maddie becoming closer to someone the other two girls deem and enemy, Zoey having a 24 year old teacher possibly flirting with her and using The Church and spirituality as a way of connecting with her, and finally Angela, who lets Rob, her flavor of the month, treat her with the lack of respect she deserves and will blame everyone else but him. They are there for each other but they are realizing they can at times, go into “unappreciated and feeling judged” territories.

Super easy and fast read. I’m sure it is a fun read for people around 15 years of age but for me, it was okay. I think it’s just not my cup of tea because of the way the author uses the language in which the girls use when texting and I had a slight disadvantage as I didn’t know all the lingos such as NSFW or “everybody was kung fu fighting those jerks were fast as lightning!” Again, it’s just my age that’s showing. ;)

What I do appreciate is that at the end, the three girls' friendship does show loyalty and being there for each other - no matter what.
