I borrowed this as an audio book from my local library, which meant that I could listen to the story as I went about the daily activities of domestic life. As I listened, it caused me to reflect on how far we have come in some ways and yet not so in others for the cause of feminism. I was a teenager at the time the Women’s Liberation movement was making its impact on society and there are many ways that I have personally benefited in the years since from the determination of those early feminists. In other ways, nothing much has changed. It is (usually) the women in society who make sure the mundane but necessary tasks of cooking, cleaning and laundry, to name but a few are done and I think the outlook is that nothing is going to change anytime soon. So on a general note, this was a good reflection on the social history of my lifetime but on a personal level, it spoke to me of the importance of female friendships and how they can change at different times of our lives and between different generations. Read this book and let the tears flow.
