The Unhoneymooners
THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews * Publishers Weekly * Library Journal Named a "Must-Read" by TODAY, Us Weekly, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Goodreads, Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, Southern Living, Book Riot, Woman's Day, The Toronto Star, and more! For two sworn enemies, anything can happen during the Hawaiian trip of a lifetime--maybe even love--in this romantic comedy from the New York Times bestselling authors of Roomies. Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion...she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas. Olive braces herself for wedding hell, determined to put on a brave face, but when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, the only people who aren't affected are Olive and Ethan. Suddenly there's a free honeymoon up for grabs, and Olive will be damned if Ethan gets to enjoy paradise solo. Agreeing to a temporary truce, the pair head for Maui. After all, ten days of bliss is worth having to assume the role of loving newlyweds, right? But the weird thing is...Olive doesn't mind playing pretend. In fact, the more she pretends to be the luckiest woman alive, the more it feels like she might be. With Christina Lauren's "uniquely hilarious and touching voice" (Entertainment Weekly), The Unhoneymooners is a romance for anyone who has ever felt unlucky in love.

I had such a fun time reading this one! Well, kind of.
Olive always sees herself as the unlucky one as compared to her identical twin sister, Ami. Unlucky in love, career, you name it. Ami is so lucky she always seems to be winning all kinds of lucky draws that â surprise! Her entire wedding is completely free of charge. Olive is happy for her twin, of course, but to have to spend the whole day with Ethan, her nemesis aka soon to be brother-in-law, it's one of the worst things that can ever happen. Luckily enough (or is it unlucky?), she and Ethan were the only ones not affected by food poisoning during the wedding buffet. It's obvious that Ami and her new husband won't be able to go for their (also free of charge) honeymoon. Under the pushing of the newlyweds, Olive and Ethan find themselves being offered a vacation to Hawaii. They only have to avoid each other's company. How hard can that be? But then as luck would have it, they meet Olive's new boss and Ethan's ex. The importance of pretending to be newlyweds couldn't get anymore real. Olive should hate it, but the more time she spend with Ethan, the more she realised that she could have gotten lucky after all.
It's impossible not to love Olive from the get-go. She's a pessimist, and having read about all the things that have happened to her in her life, I wouldn't blame her. Because of this, we see that she has a low level of self-confidence. It's very obvious when put together with her twin sister. She's insecure about a lot of things, but she actually finds that she's okay with that. She loves herself despite her flaws, and that's pretty awesome. That said, it's because of this reason that she's able to be happy for her twin no matter what, making her an amazing sister. Olive is also a terrible liar â â so how do you think she fared when she's forced to act as someone else's wife? Terribly, but with such hilarity I couldn't not bask in it! It's pretty obvious from the interactions between her and Ethan that both of them have a lot of chemistry, from their quarrels to how they lift each other up during their down moments. The good tingles were definitely there.
But of course this relationship isn't all unicorns and sunshine. This book actually took us through what happened after Olive and Ethan returned home from Maui (this place sounds absolutely beautiful, by the way!). I am usually averse to this; a lot of times, the story will go downhill, and I would end up DNFing or skimming through, so being able to complete this fully said a lot, even if I didn't agree entirely with it.
To me, what came after the Maui trip was full of negativity. I found myself clenching my jaws and feeling angered and frustrated by the series of events a lot. I was disappointed to find out that this book is not the light and fluffy read impressed upon me. It's filled with so much drama related to family, career, trust, and their relationship that I just didn't have the mood for. It's as if I was on a different book entirely, even though the events do tell us a lot more of how loving and loyal (to their family) the two are. The epilogue made up for all the terrible emotions felt during this period â â but only just. I've almost forgotten all the fun times I've had by then.
Dragging on more than I would have liked isn't the main problem. Everyone's life is full of drama from time to time. Including it in only makes it even more real.
The main problem is this: Ethan had already lost a place in my heart. This also means I don't agree with how the conflict is handled at the end. Call me grumpy, but that second chance everyone thinks Ethan deserves? I feel he needed to work harder than that to earn it.
Luckily, I didn't completely forget how much I enjoyed it when Olive and Ethan were still on their Maui trip. *winks* Would have made it on my favourites list were it not for the last third that completely spoiled my love for Ethan.

I'd give this a solid 3.5 stars. I definitely get the hype around this one, it's got a great enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance. Olive and Ethan had incredible banter and dialogue that it was hard not to love them together. The main reason this is not higher rated (for me personally) is the whole Dane situation at the end. Not to spoil anything - Ethan's reaction to it is understandable because it's his brother so it would be a normal reaction, but he definitely needed to grovel more when he finds out the truth.
This was Lit Chicks June pick. And we just loved it sooooo much. Such a funny book! Enemies to lovers done right!! Link to our YouTube review is below!
