The Unhoneymooners

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews * Publishers Weekly * Library Journal

Named a "Must-Read" by TODAY, Us Weekly, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Goodreads, Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, Southern Living, Book Riot, Woman's Day, The Toronto Star, and more!

For two sworn enemies, anything can happen during the Hawaiian trip of a lifetime--maybe even love--in this romantic comedy from the New York Times bestselling authors of Roomies.

Olive Torres is used to being the unlucky twin: from inexplicable mishaps to a recent layoff, her life seems to be almost comically jinxed. By contrast, her sister Ami is an eternal champion...she even managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a slew of contests. Unfortunately for Olive, the only thing worse than constant bad luck is having to spend the wedding day with the best man (and her nemesis), Ethan Thomas.

Olive braces herself for wedding hell, determined to put on a brave face, but when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, the only people who aren't affected are Olive and Ethan. Suddenly there's a free honeymoon up for grabs, and Olive will be damned if Ethan gets to enjoy paradise solo.

Agreeing to a temporary truce, the pair head for Maui. After all, ten days of bliss is worth having to assume the role of loving newlyweds, right? But the weird thing is...Olive doesn't mind playing pretend. In fact, the more she pretends to be the luckiest woman alive, the more it feels like she might be.

With Christina Lauren's "uniquely hilarious and touching voice" (Entertainment Weekly), The Unhoneymooners is a romance for anyone who has ever felt unlucky in love.

I'd give this a solid 3.5 stars. I definitely get the hype around this one, it's got a great enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance. Olive and Ethan had incredible banter and dialogue that it was hard not to love them together. The main reason this is not higher rated (for me personally) is the whole Dane situation at the end. Not to spoil anything - Ethan's reaction to it is understandable because it's his brother so it would be a normal reaction, but he definitely needed to grovel more when he finds out the truth.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, while fun and light, didn't rise to the top of my list of favorites from this dynamic duo writing team. The premise is intriguing: a wedding funded by sweepstakes leads to a mass food poisoning incident, leaving only the bride’s pessimistic twin sister Olive and her "nemesis,” Ethan to take the honeymoon trip to Maui. The novel is still filled with hilarious one-liners and laugh-out-loud moments that we are accustomed to from the authors, but it takes nearly 200 pages before any real romantic development occurs between Olive and Ethan. Until then, readers endure sibling-like faux hatred and unrealistic situations, which strains believability when two acquaintances from home conveniently show up on the tropical island. It does make for an interesting plot twist though! The story, told exclusively from Olive's perspective most of the time, limits insight into Ethan's thoughts, undermining the enemies-to-lovers dynamic. Once Ethan’s side of the story comes into focus, the story begins to feel more full and complete. I wish that there were more of his thoughts woven throughout but I was genuinely happy to get them toward the back half of the story. Despite its flaws, the book remains an effortless read with many special moments. The charming ending, showcasing Olive and Ethan’s imperfect yet satisfying relationship, adds a redeeming touch. While not as perfect as other Christina Lauren novels, The Unhoneymooners still offers an entertaining escape and I would still put it on my list of recommendations. It’s tough to write 5 stars every time, right!?
