Whereas the Australian outback was a brutal character in The Lost Man, the ocean and its tidal caves rule the plot in The Survivors, a novel set in a Tasmanian coastal town. Tragedy that struck a decade before, seems to be echoed in the present. Is there a link? Will both past and present come to a resolution? A tense, satisfying read, with a bittersweet conclusion.
A quick, easy read. A thriller without a thrill though, and a somewhat implausible ending.
Kieran Elliott and his girlfriend Mia return with their baby daughter Audrey to the seaside town where they grew up. It's been years since they've been back, and for Kieran it stirs up old memories of a tragic day 12 years earlier, when a huge storm took the life of his brother and his friend. A teenage girl (Mia's best friend at the time), Gabby Birch, also went missing during the storm and was never seen again. Now a new tragedy strikes, and it raises even more questions about the past and what really happened.

Kieran decides to visit the small town he grew up in and is quickly reminded of the tragedy that took place just over a decade before when a body is discovered along the beach. Kieran still carries the guilt of what happened to his brother and his friends and it doesn't help that the body they've found on the beach is reminiscent of the young girl who went missing on the same day as their deaths.
As the investigation unravels Kieran realizes there is more to what happened that day than he remembers and that the person responsible for the deaths of both girls may be closer than he ever imagined.
I really enjoyed this adult mystery. I honestly did not see the ending coming and the person responsible was a surprise to me. There were twists and turns and I often found myself flipping between suspects. I liked that all three cases were woven together through flashbacks of what happened in the past and what was happening in the present. I would recommend this to anyone looking for their next mystery read.

Really good story and if I could have given it 4.5 stars, I would have. This is the fifth book from Jane Harper that I've read now and she is a really good writer and storyteller. I've been on a streak now of sticking to authors that I've read and really liked in the past. So far, it's working out really well and I'm very pleased to be reading some really great stories and books.

Every time I thought I knew, something else would happen and I would start thinking it was someone else. The ending really surprised me and I liked that. To me, I believe that's a sign of a good writer and storyteller. I will looking forward to her new books as they come out. I would love to see her continue her Aaron Falk series.
