Five women go on a hike. Only four return. Jane Harper, the New York Times bestselling author of The Dry, asks: How well do you really know the people you work with?

When five colleagues are forced to go on a corporate retreat in the wilderness, they reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking down the muddy path.

But one of the women doesn't come out of the woods. And each of her companions tells a slightly different story about what happened.

Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing hiker. In an investigation that takes him deep into isolated forest, Falk discovers secrets lurking in the mountains, and a tangled web of personal and professional friendship, suspicion, and betrayal among the hikers. But did that lead to murder?

"Force of Nature bristles with wit; it crackles with suspense; it radiates atmosphere. An astonishing book from an astonishing writer."
--A.J. Finn, author of The Woman in the Window

Jane Harper creates a level-headed character and engages in creating a mystery with a slow-burn, where the complications arising from being stuck in difficult situations with different/difficult/disagreeable people come to the fore.

5 women on a weekend retreat in the forest of the Giralang ranges in Australia find themselves going off course and facing challenges they never imagined they’d have to. Reflecting on who they are and who they want to be, things get much, much more serious and dangerous when one of the 5 women goes missing, and the others emerge from the forest hours later than the appointed hour, battered and bruised… and hiding secrets.

It is now up to the very agreeable and likeable character of Aaron Falk to piece the puzzle together and maybe learn a thing or two about forgiveness himself.

Read this for:
1. A lead character to root for
2. A character to hate
3. Slow burn mystery that feeds you bits and pieces about the characters as they lose themselves in the wild
4. Learning whether the carpet python is poisonous or not

I’m ready for my next Aaron Falk story and eager to see the turn his life takes in the next one.

This was my second Jane Harper book and it was a good one. The plot was both interesting and unique, which today, is somewhat rare. I will definitely continue to follow and read Jane Harper's books!

I still am not entirely sure why a group of coworkers would go to a place such as this but it helps my attention enough while sick with Covid. I listened to the audio version.

I thought the story really dragged slowly on for too long. I think this is the last one from this author

This was an adventure/thriller involving 5 women on a work team building camping trip in the outback. Five go in, four come out. And there is a never fully described bit of corporate espionage going on as well. The book was well written and well told, alternating between the womens' trip and the search party for the missing woman, so we get the story revealed in a dual timeline, assuring that we seek to figure out what happened to Alice. I thoroughly enjoyed this and the investigators are becoming well developed characters. The narration was fabulous, providing an authentic Aussie accent to help set the stage and just the right level of tension throughout.
