The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, Book Two)

Book two in the blockbuster Maze Runner series that spawned a movie franchise and ushered in a worldwide phenomenon! And don’t miss The Fever Code, the highly-anticipated series conclusion that finally reveals the story of how the maze was built!
Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch.
The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch—the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them.
There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction—and they’re determined to survive.
Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off.
The Maze Runner and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and Maze Runner: The Death Cure are all now major motion pictures featuring the star of MTV's Teen Wolf, Dylan O’Brien; Kaya Scodelario; Aml Ameen; Will Poulter; and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Fantastic!
The first in the series was a good book, but this one was just purely fantastic and addictive to read. This is turning out to be a wonderful series!

This book was a bit more vague than the first one, but I really enjoyed the flashbacks that Thomas started having. It was great to see Thomas developing more as a character, but I would've appreciated some more time with his buddies Newt and Minho. Also, Aris supposedly played an important role in their past but we didn't learn too much about that, which fell short for me.
I didn't love The Maze Runner. In fact, much like this book I gave it only two stars. But as mediocre and unfulfilling as The Maze Runner was I really hate not finishing a series, especially one that is really one book split into several. So, I read The Scorch Trials. It's pretty much more of the same. Except Thomas spends more time unconscious in this book than in the first. In fact, that's pretty much the standard cut-scene: Thomas falls asleep or loses consciousness.

And here's something about the book that *should* have reeled me in, caught my imagination: it's about zombies! And I love zombies! But, sadly, it's just not well done because we never get more than sad little glimpses of the world-as-it-is. And that is kind of important in a dystopian story.
I felt that Thomas was an underdeveloped character in the first book, in this one he just annoys me. If he is the great hope for the future of mankind then I fear what will transpire in book three. And I will read book three. (And quite possibly root for the zombies.) Because I'm a literary masochist. Apparently.
