The Pucking Wrong Number: A Hockey Romance (The Pucking Wrong Series Book 1)

Best of #BookTok: A star athlete crosses the line from passion into obsession in this darkly addictive hockey-romance novel from USA Today-bestselling author C.R. Jane.

"Give me a second chance, babe . . . and I'll blow your mind."

Monroe doesn't know why she answers the text that's obviously meant for someone else. Or why she keeps answering. Maybe it's because she's all alone in a big city and in desperate need of a lifeline. Or maybe it's because each exchange leaves her intrigued and more than a little turned on.

Still, Monroe never would've snarked back if she'd known she was talking to the "Golden Boy" of the Dallas Knights. She couldn't care less about Lincoln Daniels' hockey-god status, and this only seems to attract him more. He's used to scoring on and off the ice, and now he's obsessed with his next goal: making Monroe his--no matter what it takes.

"Intense" doesn't begin to cover the way Lincoln pursues her. But despite the red flags, Monroe starts to crave the way he makes her feel really, truly wanted . . . Maybe Mr. Wrong Number is actually Mr. Right.

This edition features two brand-new character illustrations, a signed letter from the author, a curated playlist, and a recipe from the story.

This book had a strong premise—anonymous flirty texts with a mysterious stranger who turns out to be a famous hockey player? Yes, please. But The Pucking Wrong Number took that idea and ran it straight into a wall of toxicity, obsession, and eyebrow-raising behavior. At 340 pages, this was far too long for what was essentially a dark smutty romance. The sex scenes were plentiful, but only one of them really brought the heat. Monroe and Lincoln had some sweet moments—his nickname “dream girl” was swoon-worthy and their initial flirty text exchanges had me hooked—but those highs were overshadowed by some deeply disturbing choices. Lincoln’s backstory felt forced and didn’t quite earn the sympathy it was aiming for. Monroe’s traumatic childhood and survival instincts were much more compelling—but unfortunately, the book kept dragging her into increasingly dangerous situations. Lincoln getting her fired and evicted as a twisted way of “protecting” her was already pushing it, but drugging her and chaining her to a bed? That went way past morally gray and straight into “call the cops” territory. The tattoo of her name on his dick? I mean… yikes. Yes, the author warns readers that this is a relationship full of red flags, but knowing it’s problematic doesn’t make it easier to stomach. If you like your romances toxic and your heroes unhinged, this one’s for you. Personally, I needed more heat, less horror.

Lincoln is intense. From the beginning he has an obsession with Monroe. He hires a PI to find out more about her and follows her until he knows that she is ok. Once Monroe and Lincoln actually meet, he refuses to let her go. He knows that she is his soulmate and he will do anything to keep her.

Now these books are toxic AF but in the best way. Lincoln is a whole lot of love with a bit of crazy mixed in. He knows what he wants and he really just wants to take care of Monroe, in the most unconventional way. He is definitely manipulative and conniving. He doesn’t take no for an answer and pushes Monroe to her breaking point, but it works in this story. I can definitely see it not being everyone’s cup of tea but I liked it. The bromance between Lincoln and Ari was sweet and I loved how Ari just tried to push Lincoln’s buttons when it came to his girl. Who doesn’t love an obsessed, determined, slightly unhinged hockey player?

Welp…I am truly a sucker for these types of books. At first glance, I thought it was going to be a romance meet cute type of book…and man was I dead wrong!!! Did I still enjoy reading this book? Yes! Were there some questionable points that made me question if I was a sane, stable person? Yes! Will I go on to read the rest of the series? Hell Yes!! And with all that being said, I’m going to lay down, and hope that a world famous sexy hockey player texts my phone… Good Night
