The Last Party: A Novel

On New Year’s Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests; his vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he’s generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbors. But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake. On New Year’s Day, Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects and secrets. With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn’t who wanted Rhys dead…but who finally killed him.

Most of the characters were cardboard, one-dimensional stereotypes of the rich and famous. Greed, avarice, and of course, male predators and teenage rape victims. I would just once like to read a story without women being victimized. Leo, the British police detective, was the only character that I halfway liked. His ex-wife, on the other hand, was a shrill and almost unbelievable character devised to make Leo’s life miserable. Ffion, the other half of the detective team, was very hard to like. And it looks like the author is building a book series on her? At 400+ pages, with the confusion of too many characters and not much to recommend for it, I’d say continuing this series is a firm ‘no’ for me.
