The Last Party: A Mysterious Book Club Read (DC Morgan)

"Wicked fun, devilishly clever, with echoes of Agatha Christie." --Patricia Cornwell, #1 New York Times bestselling author

At midnight, one of them is dead. By morning, all of them are suspects.

It's the party to end all parties....but not everyone is here to celebrate.

On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests. His vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he's generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbors.

But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.

On New Year's Day, Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects. The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbors, friends and family--and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.

With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn't who wanted Rhys dead...but who finally killed him.

In a village with this many secrets, murder is just the beginning.

"Brilliant, so atmospheric....I fell in love with the courageous, complicated detective Ffion Morgan and I think readers will too." --Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author of The It Girl

To be honest, I DNF’d, not because it was a bad book but because I had others that this one failed to pull be away from. I think it will be one I will go back to and finish. Here are some of my favorite lines I highlighted: “That lot at The Shore Know how to throw a party. Most importantly, they know to invite the locals. Curiosity wins over grudges, every time.” “Generation Z. All those feelings.” “it’s true then: Rhys Llyod is dead. He’s really dead. Thank God for that.”

The Last Party is set at Mirror Lake in Wales everyone knows everyone. On New Year’s Eve Rhys Lloyd hosted a party, just past midnight his body was found floating on the lake. Who killed him and why?
The book flips from past to present and has a lot of characters. It is a slow burn but I think it needs to be to get all the important information across and there are a lot of twists to this mystery. I was shocked by the revelation at the end.
It flowed perfectly and I really liked DC Ffion Morgan. I can’t wait to read more from this series.
This was a great addition to Clare Mackintosh’s books.

"Secrets aren’t solitary; they’re contagious." A classic murder mystery where 3/4 of a small town in Wales have a motive for wanting the dead guy dead. DC Ffion Morgan is so quick-witted and funny. I enjoyed the relationship that developed between her and DC Leo Brady. I haven't had much exposure to Welsh culture, so the tension between the Welsh side of the investigation and the British side was interesting to me. Sexual assault, teen pregnacy, and shame are among the main themes explored. There is some alcohol and drug use described.
