The Duke and I: The (Bridgertons Book 1)

A #1 New York Times Bestseller

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the story of Daphne Bridgerton, in the first of her beloved Regency-set novels featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix.

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.

The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule...

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.

Daphne is out this season, but she’s seen as a friend instead of a romantic partner by suitable gentlemen. She encounters the Duke of Hastings and they decide to pretend to court each other. This makes Daphne look more desirable to other men and discourages mothers from wanting to match their daughters with the Duke. This plan doesn’t go well as they both fall for each other, but the Duke doesn’t desire marriage. I’m not a romance girl, but I love period films. I watched the Bridgerton series and fell in love with it. I needed to read the book. This is the first romance book I’ve read and I enjoyed every bit of it. It won’t be the last.

So, I'm one of the many readers who watched the Netflix adaptation first and then quickly ordered a copy of the book--not my usual formula. I'm not sure how this delightful romance series has failed to come under my radar, but overall, I had so much fun reading this book. In fact, it was five stars until I reached that very controversial chapter towards the end. I was curious how I would feel about it, and I have to admit it made me very uncomfortable. Would it have made me uncomfortable twenty years ago when the book was published?? I would hope so, but it definitely bothered me in 2021. And I consider that progress! I did like that the author tried to showcase a woman taking control of her sexuality, but there's a better way to handle it. I will say the ending was a little too much for me. Too HEA even for this hopeless romantic. But I'm hoping the rest of the series is controversy-free, because I'd love to move forward with it. I had no idea it would be such a humorous book!

I like the bridgerton series. I love reading the interactions of the siblings and how they do support each other. I also love that they are in all the books and dont give up on one another. It is fun being apart of each siblings journey of finding a partner. I like how each book is different and covers topics that are a little heavy but puts it in a lighthearted way that they dont way the stories down.

⭐️⭐️ A Rough Start to the Series I wanted to love this book—it’s fun, flirty, and sets up the Regency-era gossip and matchmaking chaos that made Bridgerton so popular. But the romance between Daphne and Simon? Yikes. Their banter had its moments, but their relationship relied way too much on miscommunication and power imbalances, and one particular scene (if you know, you know) completely ruined any enjoyment I had. The pacing was inconsistent, the side characters were more entertaining than the leads, and overall, it left a bad taste in my mouth.
