Shades of Wicked: A Night Rebel Novel

In this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!

The Rule Breaker...

Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless…and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he's never been able to abide by the rules for long.

The Law Maker...

Veritas’ normal role is police, judge, and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait...well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hotspots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s carefully cultivated, devil-may-care roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers Veritas has shocking secrets of her own. As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences.

I love jumping back in this world with characters I've loved for years! It's really "expanded" since Jeaniene introduced us to these characters all those years ago. While this is a companion series and has the best IMPACT if these are read in *publication order* it is for sure not required. It stands on it's own. Right off, you can tell this will be a series (besides, you know, the series number listed after the title up there ^^), not a standalone spin-off like some of the other characters. Which makes me HAPPY.

We've seen Veritas throughout pop up here and there, but never enough to really gauge a feeling for her. I do like her - but there was something that kept me separated from her the whole book. I don't know if it's her personality for being so OLD, or the fact that it's hard for me to see her pain and struggles that she has endured throughout her life, but there is something seriously off about her character. It's a writing flaw IMO, so I wont go there. Ian has been a character that I personally, went from loathing to liking. I do think this is a case of MISUNDERSTOOD-ITIS. There is a lot more to him than meets the eye. Today - they are an awesome team!

Another thing that really kept me from loving this. I mentioned that the world has expanded, but in the other books leading up to the next as the series progressed, it felt natural. With Shades of Wicked, we are expected to just GO WITH IT when it comes to their powers, supernatual beings, etc. It doesn't fit her other books and how they were written. her writing felt different completely, if I were honest.

All in all, I did enjoy it. I love seeing my favorite characters, and the world expand (even if the execution was annoying). I love how this ended, and I can't wait for book two and I will FOR SURE be purchasing this for my collection!
