Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 1)

By Jeaniene Frost

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn't have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Yet another entry in the paranormal romance genre I seem to be gravitating towards lately. I could do without some of the romance, but I like hanging out in the world of vampires and other mythical creatures.

I do like the heroine's gradual journey towards self confidence, and in general I find her a likeable character, but I can't excuse killing the human governor, no matter how "evil" he was.

I'm also a little puzzled about whether Bones is meant to be a tribute to Spike from Buffy or simply a copy. I had a lot of trouble with the narrator's voice for Bones at first, as she really can't do British accents that well, but I got used to it.

I liked the book well enough to listen to the second one in the series, which I already bought b/c it was on sale at Audible.

I admit this series has been in my TBR pile for a bit too long. After reading many, many, positive reviews, I finally started book one when my friend talked about how good it was. She told me to hurry up and read it because it's a series that makes you want to talk about it. I am thrilled with the characters here. Cat is a great heroine who you'll love the more you read about her. Bones is perfect for her and they are a dynamic duo that you won't soon forget. For me, this will go in my favorites list. It is exciting and starts off capturing your attention and is great right through the end. I love this book!
