Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, Nicholas Sparks, and M. Night Shyamalan for the opportunity to read this ARC.
If you had asked me to predict what this unexpected collaboration would deliver, I’d have guessed: a tender yet heartbreaking romance, plus someone who sees dead people. And honestly? That’s exactly what it is.
I haven’t read either author’s books before, though I’ve seen the films. The story follows a fairly predictable structure, and while I hoped to be more on edge, the familiarity made it an oddly cozy read despite the subject matter. There are paranormal threads and a central mystery, but by the time the final reveal arrived, I wished for sharper twists and more surprises.
Overall, I liked it but didn't love it. A solid, if not standout, read.
This book was provided to me for free in exchange for my honest review. Rating: 3.5/5

I honestly really wanted to love this book. M. Night (the king of twists) with Nicholas Sparks, the romance was unmatched. In a way, this book was engaging because you're constantly on your toes trying to find out what truly happened to Wren. Halfway through, you're also feeling doubt along with Tate and Oscar about who Wren really is. Is her truth reliable? However, I feel like that part of it all was dismissed towards the end and not really reviewed at all. Once the murder mystery is solved, we don't really get all those loose strings tied. Why was Wren such a troublemaker? Why did so many people hate her? HOw did she always end up in these awkward situations? Was she as manipulative as they said she was? Was Tessa's version of events where Wren is the homewrecker true? I mean she certainly had a pattern of stealing husbands...Also, where was Sylvia in all of this? I thought she would have a bigger part to play.
I don't know, I wanted to like Wren and Tate as a romantic couple, but it was "Just Like Heaven" with a little "Clue" mixed in for fun. Tate's selfishness and spoiled behavior to do what he wants when he wants, regardless of whether or not it hurts the kind people around him, was so frustrating! Having a friend like Oscar in our lives would be the dream.
Maybe I missed the point, but this book did leave me disappointed. I hope the movie makes up for it with the talents of Jake Gyllenhaal!
