Finally a Fantasy that I love.
Strong high fantasy. The story is based on the Arthurian legend. But Arthur is the villain and Morgan is the hero. The world of Camelot is detailed and specific. The magic is embedded in the characters, who are the Fae. The protagonist is a survivor of domestic abuse and treated as an outcast. Most of the story is a quest, with a companion that becomes the enemy that develops into respect and trust. Morgan slowly comes into her own strength as she stops taking the "medicine" that hobbles her. She is half Fae and that threatens her half brother's status as king of Camelot. As a villain, Arthur is insidious, he is described in memories as a younger brother needing to be protected. He is corrupted by a vicious Father into a tyrant. Story is compelling, it is the beginning of a series and I want to read more. There are a few anachronistic moments that take the reader out the story. The use of modern curse words are jarring, not for their vulgarity but because they don't match the world. I like the inclusion of LGBT characters and content
It mirrors our world as we seem to regress with our acceptance of love in all its manifestations
Overall enjoyable quest and compelling characters in a fantasy world. It is reminiscent of The Mists of Avalon in that it focuses on Morgan, the half sister of Arthur.

Briar Boleynâs storytelling is rich and evocative, painting a world where magic is as real as the danger lurking around every corner. The characters are deeply developed, with Morganâs internal struggles and growth taking center stage. The novelâs pacing is well-balanced, allowing readers to savor the intricate world-building while staying engaged with the plotâs twists and turns.
The book is perfect for fans of Holly Black, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Sarah J. Maas, offering a blend of fantasy, romance, and adventure

Queen of Roses is a (loosely based) King Arthur retelling set in a world where Fae exist. The writing in this novel was amazing and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series! I really enjoyed Morgan's character and am here for Draven! Can't wait to see where their story goes!
Fair warning, this is a SLOW (emphasis on that word) burn. Morgan is sent with the head of the King's Guard, Kairos Draven, to retrieve Excalibur for her half-brother. Her brother just so happens to be the king, Arthur. I really enjoyed Morgan's character development and watching her come into her own and her half Fae heritage.
I'm really looking forward to continuing on Morgan's journey in book 2, Court of Claws.
Thank you so much to Briar Boleyn, NetGalley and Starwater Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!!
