Outliers: The Story of Success

Explore what sets high achievers apart--from Bill Gates to the Beatles--in this seminal work from "a singular talent" (New York Times Book Review) Malcolm Gladwell, bestselling author of Blink and The Bomber Mafia and host of the podcast Revisionist History

In this stunning book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different?

His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.

short summary: this is a book about the nature of privilege. here's the video that makes the same point https://youtube.com/watch?v=hD5f8GuNuGQ

Not a review, notes for myself.

There is no magic to success. There are droves of people with the same intelligence, grit, vision, and spirit, or greater, than Bill Gates or any other incredibly successful person.
These people find success, but to become a true OUTLIER is dependent on stacks of small advantages accumulating and doors opening
Cultural and slight differences in psychology and outlook can have profound effects on the success or failure of someone
Success and failure are real things with real causes, again no magic
A crucible of experience and repeated effort and failure, 10,000 hours of practice makes mastery
Big Ideas of today are not the big ideas of tomorrow, the computer revolution is as over and gone as the American Industrial Revolution. The next revolution will hit and the people who already have their hours logged and seize the opportunity are the ones who will become outliers. There will be no more Jewish Bronx Lawyers who found giant firms. From and his partners "advantages" are no longer relevant although they can still produce success
Timing is EVERYTHING- Luck really is opportunity meets preparation. The two create exponential returns on each other
Effort, grit, and persistence is the rule. Timing and opportunity are what cause the explosion, grit and determination build the rocket around you
Where do you want your 10,000 hours to go?
The cultural effect on people is profound- lessons from the Korean Case study is that transparency and direct and clear communication of information is the most valuable infrastructure to working and problem solving. Communication is key, and the quality of communication leads to the quality of solving problems

I've been reading Malcolm Gladwell's books in order, making this the 3rd one. While I like his story telling style, his research appears more and more suspect with each additional book. This particular book tried to approach each case study through the same cultural lens, and he shaped all the available data to match. When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. The plane crash theory was particularly bad, and Gladwell was really taken to task on this: (http://askakorean.blogspot.com/2013/07/culturalism-gladwell-and-airplane.html).
