Keeping 13 is an emotional gauntlet — one that feels intentionally written for mature readers who can sit with heavy themes, complicated trauma, and the kind of tension that knots itself in your chest. This book had me anxious, worried, and genuinely heartbroken at times. I cried more than once, not because the story manipulates emotion, but because Chloe Walsh leans into the raw, unfiltered reality of what these characters are carrying.

Shannon’s journey is powerful, but it’s not easy to witness. Her healing is slow, nonlinear, and often painful, and the narrative doesn’t shy away from showing the psychological weight she’s under. There were moments where her fragility felt overwhelming; not because it was poorly written, but because it was real. That realism, however, may be too intense for younger or more sensitive readers.

Johnny’s arc deepens here, though the miscommunication and emotional distance between them can feel repetitive. At times, it adds tension; at others, it risks dragging out conflict that could have evolved sooner. Still, the connection between them remains the heart of the story, and when the emotional beats land, they land with force.

The pacing swings between explosive and slow‑burn, which mirrors the characters’ internal chaos but occasionally disrupts the flow. Even so, the payoff is worth it. This book doesn’t just continue the story — it deepens it, darkens it, and demands more from the reader.

Keeping 13 isn’t just a sequel; it’s an emotional experience. It’s messy, heavy, and beautifully human. It left me wrung out in the best way, even if I needed a moment to breathe afterward.

I think the trauma fatigue got to me because I don't really know how to rate this one

“Well Boom Book Fucking Boom!” What a ride! I can't believe how quickly I tore through this book. Sure, I might have skimmed a few pages because, I'm human, but damn, it was worth it! Shannon and Johnny? Total endgame material. That's what kept me hooked. Didn't quite vibe with the other characters like some folks did, so I might hold off on diving into the next one for now. I'm just glad I picked up this series—it's rekindled my love for not putting books down.
