All rise... for Judge Stone.

The most respected citizen in Union Springs, Alabama (population 3,314), is Judge Mary Stone. She holds two responsibilities sacred: running her family farm and presiding over her courtroom. It's there she draws the most controversial case in the history of the South.

Criminally, it's open-and-shut.

Ethically, there is no middle ground. Essentially, it's a choice between life and death.

No judge can satisfy everyone. It would be dangerous to try. But Judge Stone is willing to fight to bring justice to the people and place she loves.

Wow, wow, wow! I’m so glad I listened to the audiobook version of Judge Stone because Viola Davis’ narration truly brought the plot to life. Set in the South, where politics deeply influences its people, you’re immediately immersed in a highly controversial case where your heart and the law clash. As a newcomer to the legal thriller genre, I appreciate that while this particular book is centered around courtroom drama, it doesn’t delve too deeply into legalese, making it easy to understand and follow. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a truly gripping story (and one about a VERY controversial subject) that combines emotional depth with a touch of legal intrigue. I was liiiiiterally kept on the edge of my seat and I guarantee you will be too. P.S. the trigger warnings listed are spoilers so maybe don't scroll or read further if you're adding this to your TBR! Judge Stone tackles controversial, deeply polarizing issues head-on. A tense and timely courtroom/legal thriller that I found comparable to another provoking novel - A Time to Kill. ⁣ ⁣ Now, I'm not saying that the novel was great because of Viola Davis - but she was the icing and cherry on top!⁣ ⁣ Judge Stone was written in a way that made her deeply relatable, nurturing, and human. I admired her dedication not only to her role on the bench but also to her service within her community and on her farm. The challenges she faces as a Black woman serving as a judge in a small-minded, openly racist town are both infuriating and eye-opening. Her internal conflict—balancing impartiality with doing what is morally right—is portrayed with real depth. The struggle she faced at every turn would've made me disgracefully bow out of that role. It's a huge role to fill, and to do so with compassion and neutrality is commendable. (Thank you Joe Biden for appointing 63 Black federal judges!) I also liked seeing how her daily work and rulings were influenced by local politicians and religious leaders. ⁣ ⁣ Some small nuances that I had:⁣ 1. this was one of very few times that I wish the novel was a bit longer. 2. I wanted more about Nova’s case and Bria's background and perspectives a bit more fleshed out. However, this is a story about Judge Stone so I understand why the focus stayed centered on her. 3. Even with a few lingering questions, the storytelling was strong enough that I didn’t mind filling in some gaps on my own.⁣ ⁣ I had several thoughts while reading:⁣ 1. Why are people so free in disrespecting Black women in positions of authority?⁣ 2. How are Black people still living in small racist towns? but after the great Alabama brawl of 2023, they'll be alright..⁣ 3. Why do so many people feel entitled to an opinion on any woman's body?⁣ 4. Why is it so hard for people to mind their own business? ⁣ ⁣ I live for stories like this! This was my 3rd 5 ⭐️ this year, and it’s not #3. The ending was great and makes me hopeful that there may be more to come!⁣
