Ice Planet Barbarians

The international publishing phenomenon Ice Planet Barbarians, now in a special print edition!

Fall in love with the out-of-this-world romance between Georgie Carruthers, a human woman, and Vektal, an alien from another planet, in this expanded edition with bonus materials and an exclusive epilogue—in print only!

You’d think being abducted by aliens would be the worst thing that could happen to me. And you’d be wrong. Because now the aliens are having ship trouble, and they’ve left their cargo of human women—including me—on an ice planet.

We’re not equipped for life in this desolate winter wasteland. Since I’m the unofficial leader, I head out into the snow to look for help.

I find help all right. A big blue horned alien introduces himself in a rather . . . startling way. Vektal says that I'm his mate, his chosen female—and that the reason his chest is purring is because of my presence. He’ll help me and my people survive, but this poses a new problem.

If Vektal helps us survive, I’m not sure he’s going to want to let me go.

Ruby Dixon wastes no time telling you exactly what kind of ride you’ve signed up for in Ice Planet Barbarians with a bold and scary opening. Did anyone else keep hearing E.T. (Remix) by Katy Perry featuring Kayne West in your head while reading this? A group of human women wake up in the worst possible situation. They have been abducted and brutalized by alien captors. When the ship fails, they are dumped onto an ice planet that feels like a frozen exile. Survival becomes the immediate goal, until the blue, horned inhabitants step in. They are called Sakh. What follows shifts from fear to curiousity as the women are folded into a culture built on mating bonds, survival, and devotion. That opening casts a long shadow. The violence in the beginning is not subtle. Thankfully, it does not last past the introduction. The story asks you to move from horror into romance. The emotional pivot is not smooth. Still, the book manages to be oddly compelling. Vektal stands at the center of the romance as the Chief male of the Sakh. His devotion is intense. He learns Georgie’s needs with care, adapts to her culture, and treats her as something to be protected and cherished. That dynamic softens the harsher edges and creates a romance that feels attentive rather than terrifying. The idea of the Khui parasite choosing mates adds a fated layer that removes some agency. Which may either heighten the fantasy or raise more forced consent questions depending upon the reader. Georgie evolves into a strong leader of the human women and the romantic interest of Vektal. She steps into the unknown with a calm that borders on fearless by guiding the other women through choices that would terrify most people. Her willingness to adapt keeps the story from slipping too far into a spectacle. Also, she realizes that she really likes Vektal's body. 😉 The worldbuilding is surprisingly thoughtful. There is a stranded alien race surviving for centuries, a biological bond with a parasite that dictates compatibility, and a frozen landscape that demands resilience. The tone swings between survival story, cultural exchange, and very explicit romance. Sometimes all in the same chapter. The audiobook adds an enjoyable layer to the experience. Mason Lloyd and Hollie Jackson commit to the material with impressive restraint. I would have not been able to keep a straight face while narrating this book. Their pacing keeps the story moving. Though the switching of voices between characters depending on the chapter's point of view was jarring for me. This is a book that thrives on contradiction. It is unsettling, seductive, uncomfortable, and entertaining. You will question your own reactions while getting exactly what you came for which is a very specific fantasy delivered with confidence. Will this story work for everyone? Not even close. Ice Planet Barbarians is readers who are curious about alien romance with a strong dose of obsession and survival. I won't be picking up the sequel, but I didn't hate this book.

Trigger Warnings Needed

In the newer physical and ebooks, Ruby Dixon has added trigger warnings for the extra dark scenes that apparently only appear in this first book. However, the audiobook has no such warnings and it was very alarming going into this first book and running across a triggering scene within the first 5 minutes. I finished it because my best friend recommended it but otherwise I would have DNFed at that first scene because of the lack of warnings so just be aware as you go into this if you decide to read it.

I can’t believe I waited this long to dive into a monster romance! No wonder my sister sings Ruby Dixon’s praises—she writes a wildly entertaining story that had me laughing out loud and giggling like a schoolgirl.

I didn’t expect to love it this much, but here we are: completely charmed by blue aliens, oddly tender romances, and a storyline that’s somehow equal parts ridiculous and heartwarming.

I get it now. I’m a Ruby Dixon convert, ready to tackle this 50ish book series with enthusiasm and probably a little blushing.
