Harvest Season packs Cape Carnage with serial killers, amateur detectives, buried bodies, suspicious lawmen, and enough cleanup supplies to make any hardware store employee nervous. Brynne Weaver’s dark romantic comedy has plenty happening beneath its bloodstained surface. The problem is that much of it still feels surprisingly bland.
Harper Starling and Nolan Rhodes are building a cozy life together while hiding an impressive collection of crimes. Nolan now knows more about Harper’s past and the identity she buried before arriving in Cape Carnage. His original plan to kill her has transformed into fierce devotion. Leaving them to juggle romance, trauma, and an expanding list of people who could expose them.
Their domestic bliss failed to hold my attention. The relationship relies heavily on familiar dark-romance tropes without adding a unique twist to make them feel fresh. Harper and Nolan are serial killers in love which should be exciting. Their home life often feels ordinary instead. Reading the trilogy out of order may have weakened my connection to them, but the sequel offers limited help to readers meeting the couple here.
Arthur Lancaster brought far more chaotic energy to the book. His humor, warmth, and oddball charm made him surprisingly easy to enjoy before his darker habits became apparent. His declining health also makes him volatile. This forces Harper and Nolan into frantic cleanup operations after his latest violent decisions. Those scenes contain some of the book’s strongest banter. They are funny, uncomfortable, and deeply messed up at the same time.
Sheriff Yates adds another threat to the couple. Though his villainous role pushed Cape Carnage into serial-killer overload. Harper kills. Nolan kills. Arthur mentors killers and remains active. The sheriff also harbors horrifying secrets. How many murderers can one seaside town hold? Cape Carnage is certainly living up to its name.
The audiobook features Rob Hatchet, Samantha Brentmoor, and Brynne Weaver. The female performance fit the darkly playful atmosphere well. Rob Hatchet’s narration was harder for me to follow. His delivery sounded slurred at times. I frequently struggled to understand individual words.
Harvest Season has flashes of twisted humor and a memorable supporting character in Arthur. The central romance never developed enough intensity to compete with the crowded collection of killers and secrets surrounding it. Readers who loved Tourist Season and want more domestic villain romance may enjoy this story. Readers hoping for a bold departure from standard dark-romance tropes may find the harvest rather sparse.
A fun but dark read. The cliff hanger has me DYING for book 3!! As usual, the 🌶️ is top notch.
I wouldn’t say this is as great as her other books and found it a bit predictable. Maybe it’s just too much to hope to top the Ruinous Love series.
These cliffhangers are killing me!!! Man this book is so good but had me sad though! But I’m glad a certain character took matters into their own hands though it made me cry. The third book cannot come fast enough! Well done to the amazing narrators as always for bringing this story to life. Well done indeed! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🥰
