Final Girls: A Novel
THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER "If you liked Gone Girl, you'll like this."--Stephen King Ten years ago, six friends went on vacation. One made it out alive.... In that instant, college student Quincy Carpenter became a member of a very exclusive club--a group of survivors the press dubbed "The Final Girls" Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout's knife; Sam, who endured the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape the massacre at Pine Cottage. Despite the media's attempts, the three girls have never met. Now, Quincy is doing well--maybe even great, thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a caring almost-fiancé; a popular baking blog; a beautiful apartment; and a therapeutic presence in Coop, the police officer who saved her life. Her mind won't let her recall the events of that night; the past is in the past...until the first Final Girl is found dead in her bathtub and the second Final Girl appears on Quincy's doorstep. Blowing through Quincy's life like a hurricane, Sam seems intent on making her relive the trauma of her ordeal. When disturbing details about Lisa's death emerge, Quincy desperately tries to unravel Sam's truths from her lies while evading both the police and bloodthirsty reporters. Quincy knows that in order to survive she has to remember what really happened at Pine Cottage. Because the only thing worse than being a Final Girl is being a dead one. Like Quincy, I found myself questioning everything I knew as I read this book. There was never ending twists and turns that made me wonder what exactly the ultimate outcome would be here. It teaches us that sometimes you can only run from your nightmares for so long. Sometimes, you have to run and face them head on to be a real person.
Uh 🙄, not sure how I want to feel about this book. So annoyed right now after reading it. I’m A Riley Sager fan but friend, this book here took so long to get to anything good and even so, I was bored, still wanting to know what was going to happen, annoyed as heck, and not sure how I feel about it, not sure how I want to feel about it. My feelings are disappointed ☹️ for that! Rolling my eyes hard again, whatever, I guess I’ll cry now lol … just kidding!
I enjoyed the book, it wasn't really scary or anything like that. Suspenseful, a little bit. It was a fast read for me and I'd be interested in reading more books by this author.
This is Sager's first thriller, and I feel like with this book, you can really see his improvements in his later thrillers. Not to say that this book was bad, but it was missing the oomph of his other two books that I read earlier this month. I found the protagonist largely unlikable because she kept making dumb choices which was very stressful, although I did also appreciate the look into what PTSD looks like in a non-stereotypical way. The whole time, I was just like /go to therapy!!!
Even with an annoying main characters, sometimes, the side characters can save a story, but tbh, I didn't love the side characters either. Jeff was bland and pretty boring, Tina/Sam was also annoying, Coop was sweet until he wasn't but not interesting, and overall, I feel like I never really got to know any of the other characters very well beyond the surface.
I guess this review makes it seem like I hated the book, and I didn't hate it, since I gave it three stars. It was readable, it just lacked engaging characters, which is what makes a book for me and keeps me engaged, and the twist at the end didn't hit me the same way that his other books did. I don't know why, it just felt a little underwhelming.
I did like the hints of horror ~vibes that we get way more of in his later books. But you see it in this book too in the flashbacks. The main story just was lacking it completely which was disappointing.
I think I'm changing my rating to 2.5 stars...
