Do Not Disturb

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Freida McFadden comes a story of sinister secrets...

Quinn Alexander has committed an unthinkable crime.

To avoid spending her life in prison, Quinn makes a run for it. She leaves behind her home, her job, and her family. She grabs her passport and heads for the northern border before the police can discover what she's done.

But when an unexpected snowstorm forces her off the road, Quinn must take refuge at the broken-down, isolated Baxter Motel. The handsome and kindly owner, Nick Baxter, is only too happy to offer her a cheap room for the night.

Unfortunately, the Baxter Motel isn't the quiet, safe haven it seemed to be. The motel has a dark and disturbing past. And in the dilapidated house across the way, the silhouette of Nick's ailing wife is always at the window. Always watching.

In the morning, Quinn must leave the motel. She'll pack up her belongings and get back on the road to freedom.

"Do Not Disturb" by Freida McFadden is a psychological thriller about Quinn, a woman on the run after killing her abusive husband in self-defense. Caught in a snowstorm, she takes shelter at the eerie Baxter Motel, where strange residents and dark secrets lurk. As the night unfolds, Quinn realizes the motel may be more dangerous than what she left behind. This book was really good—pulled me in right from the start and kept my attention the whole way through. The plot was strong, the pacing was quick, and there were just enough twists to keep things interesting without going overboard. I didn’t completely predict the ending, but I had some suspicions, and a few of them ended up being right, which made it even more fun to read. Now, I have to say, I’m starting to get a little tired of the whole “mentally ill, disabled wife and the selfless husband holding it all together” storyline. It’s been done a lot, and it’s starting to feel a bit overused. I get why it was included here, but I was hoping for something a little fresher and different. That said, the thriller part? Absolutely there. Creepy motel, weird characters, snowy isolation vibes—loved all of that. It made for a super fast, entertaining read. If you’re looking for something quick with a good amount of suspense, this is a solid pick.

This is my first Freida McFadden book and likely to be my last. The writing was poor, the characters were underdeveloped and parts of the plot were unbelievable. At first my favorite character was Rosalie who has MS but by the end her storyline became borderline ridiculous. At least it was a fast read.

Quinn Alexander runs from a crime that should have ended her life as she knew it. Only to land in a snowed-in motel that feels like it has secrets in the walls. The Baxter Motel promises safety for one night. Instead, it becomes a pressure cooker of suspicion, strange behavior, and shifting loyalties where no one is as harmless as they first appear. Do Not Disturb wastes no time pulling you into Quinn’s desperation. She is not written to be likable because she is trying to survive. Her choices are messy, selfish, and shocking. Quinn's every interaction feels tense. You keep waiting for the moment everything collapses. The narrative keeps teasing that edge. The motel itself becomes its own character. It is isolated, claustrophobic, and filled with people who all seem just a little off. Nick, the charming owner, raises immediate questions. His dynamic with Rosalie adds another layer that becomes more unsettling as their relationship unravels. Rosalie’s health and emotional state are used against her as she becomes increasingly jealous and suspicious of Nick. The twists involving Nick, Rosalie, Quinn, Claudia, and Greta come fast and often. By the final stretch, the reveals start stacking in a way that felt hard to keep up with. Every character seems to have a secret, then another secret, then one more for good measure. It certainly kept me entertained! I also found myself stepping back and thinking, how many twists can one motel hold? The audiobook performance adds to the experience. The dual narration helps differentiate perspectives and keeps the pacing sharp. It works well for a story that depends on tension and quick shifts in perception. What stuck with me most is how far this book is willing to go. The decisions these characters make are bold and sometimes unbelievable. Naming a child after a murderer who also played matchmaker in a twisted way? What a wild choice! Do Not Disturb is a fast, twist-heavy thriller that thrives on shock and constant movement. It will hook readers who want nonstop turns and high drama. It may frustrate anyone looking for grounded decisions or carefully built logic.

I have so much confusion about this author and her books. They all feel like watered down versions of other people’s stories. On the other hand she does have her moments where she can come up with good quotes, decent characters, and books that are easy to read and get through at the end of the year!
