A Thousand Broken Pieces (Boy Kisses, 2)

Three years.

Twelve months.

A timeless grief.

After losing her beloved sister three years ago, Savannah Litchfield has been living half a life. Now seventeen--the age Poppy died--the pain of losing her is worse than ever. When Savannah's therapist suggests a trip around the world to help teens stricken by loss, she reluctantly agrees to it, clutching the unread journal Poppy left her as she goes.

Cael Woods is angry. One year after losing his older brother--the person who meant the world to him--his life has spiraled into a heady void of nothing. Once the most promising hockey player in the junior league, Cael can no longer step onto the ice without being paralyzed by memories of his brother. When his parents sign him up for a trip abroad for grieving teens, no part of him wants to go--but he does.

As Cael and Savannah embark on a journey of healing, they learn to find solace together, discovering a glimmer of light only the other can bring. And the harder they fall, the more they heal the fractured fragments of their hearts, piece by broken piece.

“I would have forever felt you were missing, Peaches. And I would have searched every inch of the world and beyond, trying to find you.” In “A Thousand Broken Pieces,” the poignant sequel to “A Thousand Boy Kisses,” Savannah and Cael emerge as a powerful duo, similar to Poppie and Rune, soulmates who navigate their brokenness together. The narrative explores the profound grief experienced by a group of friends who have all suffered significant losses, whether from school shootings, car accidents, or the death of loved ones. Savannah’s heart-wrenching journey following the death of her sister is particularly impactful. It offers a perspective I hadn’t fully appreciated in Poppie’s point of view, as I was so engrossed in Poppie and Rune's love story. The closure that this sequel provides is both unexpected and necessary. Savannah’s commitment to becoming a doctor in honour of her sister beautifully reflects her character. Throughout her challenging journey, she remains dedicated to her healing and to her connection with Cael. Their love is depicted with tenderness, especially when Rune unexpectedly appears in Japan, deepening the emotional resonance between Savannah and Cael. Cael’s struggles with the aftermath of his brother’s suicide mirror my own experiences with loss. His anger and withdrawal during the trip resonate with those who find it challenging to communicate their grief. When he sees Savannah at the airport, he recognises their bond immediately, a recognition that feels almost divine in its timing. Their relationship develops naturally as they confide in each other before reaching out to the group, creating a strong foundation for their love. Cael’s journey is portrayed with realism. His decision to seek further help reflects the complexity of coping with trauma. The poignant phone booth scene in Japan brought me to tears, as did the moment when he left Savannah a note before leaving for treatment. It’s a testament to his love for her and the lengths he’s willing to go to be better for both of them. Leo's supportive friendship throughout the trip adds another layer to the narrative, illustrating the importance of shared experiences in healing. The promise made by Cael and Savannah to reunite at Harvard signifies a more profound transformation; they are no longer the same individuals who set out on this journey. Their engagement at the place where it all began ties the narrative together beautifully, encapsulating their growth and the enduring power of love. Both “A Thousand Boy Kisses” and its sequel will stay with me long after reading, thanks to Tillie Cole’s remarkable storytelling. She truly deserves recognition for her ability to weave such poignant tales.

A Thousand Broken Pieces is a poignant tale that delves into the complexities of mourning and the redemptive power of human connection. It’s a story that lingers, prompting reflection on our own experiences with loss and the ways we find to cope and move forward.

5/5 I was so stoked to read this book. However, the more I read, the more bored I got. I was used to dark romance and smut that plain romance was boring. So around chapter 10 I took a 3 book pause & read the cat & mouse duet and where’s Molly by H.D Carlton and when I finished that at the end of November I picked back up this book and boy was I not disappointed. I realized not only was it pure romance, I just didn’t want the story in itself to end.

This book had me crying a lot. Just like the first book. It was a beautiful book and healing to read. Made me thankful for life and my family. I did get bored about half way through and it took me a while to finish but I’m glad I did.
