About The Canonball

Hi, I’m Kate, a writer and editor from the Upper Valley of New Hampshire, USA. In an effort to become a more capable writer — and instead of pursuing a formal MFA — I’ve been reading and reflecting on great works since Spring 2025.

This club operates on extended discussion through messages; no video meetings are planned. I hope this increases engagement with the work over a period of time.

We will start with the old white men — the erstwhile canon of classics — but can quickly move outside the lines.

Be curious about why these works are worth studying: Do they demonstrate qualities worth emulating or extending in your own writing? Are some of these books truly overhyped garbage? Can we get behind some undersung hero(in)es?

We’ll aim to read 10-30 pages/day, amounting to a 400-page book in about two weeks. I’ll suggest a loose schedule at the beginning of discussion.

So go ahead and canonball the party. Nothing to lose here but pristine bindings.
