About Scares & Shares Society

Every month we vote on a handful of horror books around a theme, and the winner of the poll is our book for the month! Past themes:

January 2026: Member TBR Picks (The Haar)
February 2026: Member TBR Picks 2 (Bat Eater)
March 2026: Member TBR Picks 3 (Tender is the Flesh)
April 2026: Easter Bunnies (What Moves the Dead)
May 2026: Liminal Horror (Piranesi)
June 2026: Queer Horror (Bury Your Gays)
July 2026: Summer Scares (The Troop)
August 2026: Lovecraftian Horror (Annihilation)
September 2026: Creepy Carnivals (Something Wicked This Way Comes)

Possible upcoming themes: Zombies, Folk Horror, Witchy, Cults, Horror Poetry, Ghosts/Hauntings, Sci-Fi Horror, Horror Anthologies.

Our group might be a good fit for you if you are one or more of the following: queer (strange), queer (🏳️‍🌈), artsy, witchy, inquisitive, not too serious.

We are a no pressure club that likes to use  the book of the month as a starting point for discussions about horror movies, horror genres, other books, and whatever tangents we discover along the way. You don't need to read every book or make every meeting or discussion. You are welcome to participate as you please.

It's fine if you miss a month (or six), go down a research rabbithole based on a single line of text, dnf the book, or get so obsessed that you go and read the author's entire bibliography; we're a diverse group of readers and that's what makes things fun!

Horror can be dark, disturbing, and triggering. We expect everyone to check trigger warnings on their own based on their needs and preferences. Horror can be political, controversial, and transgressive. We expect everyone to approach conversations with basic kindness and without bullying or abuse.

We hope you will come and share some scares with us!
