About Diverse Reads PHL

**kindly only apply if you want to read good books and talk about them. I will not be allowing anyone to use the good folks in this group as the basis of their research study. thanks!**

This is a safe space for debate and disagreement. That said, we do not debate about whether people are allowed to exist or have basic human rights. We are "not political" in that this is not a space to run your campaign for city council, but we will always be political in that we believe that all human beings have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Book suggestions are encouraged, and members vote for which books they will want to read, but I do curate the polls based on certain criteria around which the club was founded so not every single book suggestion will make it into a poll.

Book suggestion guidelines:

*Authors must identify as a person of color or hispanic/latinx.

*Authors must be female-identifying or nonbinary.

*I do try to alternate between older books (3+ years old) and new releases.

*Moving forward, polls will be launched 4 months ahead and will close 2-3 months ahead. Why? Have you SEEN the waitlist at the Philadelphia Free Library?? In all seriousness, accessibility is a cornerstone of book club. I try to pick casual venues where everyone orders on their own so if you choose not to eat/drink it's fine. I also will never expect you to purchase the book (that said, it's awesome if you can!).

Themes by Month:

TENTATIVE January author theme: currently anything goes within the above guidelines, putting this on there but TBD!

May author theme: AAPI Month (May)

July author theme: Pride Month (June)

September author theme: Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept/Oct)
