Things We Never Got Over

Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. Unless you count his basset hound, Waylon. Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride.

Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.

Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.

There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especiallynot the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.

At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.

Book club questions for Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score

Use these discussion questions to guide your next book club meeting.

Talk about the title. How does it relate to the book’s characters?  What are the things that Naomi never got over?  What are the things that Knox never got over?

How did the setting impact the story for you? What did you think of Knockemout, Virginia?

What did you think of the author’s decision to tell the story from the first person, giving both Naomi and Knox’s points of view? Is there anyone else’s perspective you would have liked to have heard from?

This novel has a lot of humor, but it also deals with very serious issues including domestic abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, loss and grieving, and more.  What did you think of how Lucy Score balanced the light and dark parts of the story?

There was also a thriller subplot!  Did you like the addition of the mystery around who was breaking into buildings around Knockemout and why, and the harrowing abduction at the end of the novel?  Or did it detract from the romance for you?

Knox and Naomi are a classic “opposites attract” pairing.  Did you find their connection believable? Why or why not?

Knox and Naomi hooked up within 3 weeks, something her friends and family mention is atypical for Naomi.  What did you think of the pacing of the love story?

This book got steamy!  What did you think of the level of heat and how the love scenes were written?

Naomi has to let go of her twin sister Tina to move on in her life and relationships.  Have you ever had a toxic relationship with a family member or friend that you had to end?  What was the breaking point for you?  What do you think allows Naomi to finally realize that she can neither save her sister, nor live her life making up for her sister’s mistakes?

Knox made a mistake in trying to cut Naomi and Waylay out of his life, but he had his reasons.  Did his decision feel true to his character to you?  What did you think of his character’s progression over the course of the novel?

Knox also lashed out and said some pretty terrible things to Naomi after dumping her.  If you were in her shoes, would you have forgiven him?

Knox and Nash like to beat each other up, but they clearly also love each other. Why were they estranged for so long?  What did you think of their sibling relationship?

Knox tries to use the money he won in the lottery to help the people he loves, but it sometimes backfires.  Why might people not want his money?  What would you do if you won millions of dollars in the lottery?

Waylay had a tough childhood with the neglectful Tina as a mom, but she ends the novel with a new family and a lot of people in her corner.  What do you think happens to her character after the story ends?  What do you think she’ll be like as a teenager and as an adult?

Are there any characters you wish you could have given advice to? What would you tell them?

The town of Knockemout is full of big personalities and unique characters.  Who was your favorite supporting character?

Did this book make you want to read more romances in Knockemout?  Whose love story are you more excited to read, Nash’s or Lucien’s?
