You Didn't Hear This From Me: (Mostly) True Notes on Gossip

"Gossip is the only cultural tradition I care about, and Kelsey McKinney has written its Bible" --Samantha Irby, #1 NYT bestselling author

From the host of the Normal Gossip podcast, a delightfully insightful exploration of our obsession with gossip that weaves together journalism, cultural criticism, and memoir.

As the pandemic forced us to socialize at a distance, Kelsey McKinney was mourning the juicy updates and jaw-dropping stories she'd typically collect over drinks with friends--and from her hunger, the blockbuster Normal Gossip podcast was born. With listenership in the millions, Kelsey found herself thinking more critically about gossip as a form, and wanting to better understand the role it plays in our culture.

In You Didn't Hear This From Me, McKinney explores the murkiness of everyday storytelling. Why is gossip considered a sin, and how can we better recognize when it's being weaponized? Why do we think we're entitled to every detail of a celebrity's personal life? And how do we define "gossip," anyway? As much as the book aims to treat gossip as a subject worthy of rigor, it also hopes to capture the heart of gossiping: how enchanting and fun it can be to lean over and whisper something a little salacious into your friend's ear.

With wit and honesty, McKinney unmasks what we're actually searching for when we demand to know the truth--and how much the truth really matters in the first place.

I first started listening to Kelsey McKinney's podcast Normal Gossip which is amazing. I am feral for more gossip all the time now!
This book was fantastic. I mostly listened to it and literally laughed out loud, teared up at certain times, and came out if it with perspectives which are applicable to everyday. High recommend!

Read this for one of my book clubs. I tried reading the ebook sample but the writing style was not for me. However, the audiobook - which is read by the author - was significantly better and easier to engage with. That being said, I still wasn’t super hooked for most of the book so a solid 3.25 ⭐️ for me. I do admit some of my disengagement could be due to a history of psychology reading about human behavior, the brain, etc that I often call my “fun science” since it’s different from my work science. So I can easily see this being higher rated for others, as I knew a lot of what was already in this. While I think the book maybe lacks a flow, I think if you examine each chapter individually they are relatively good and thought provoking at times. I did truly enjoy the chapters where gossip and discourse regarding women’s experiences with abusers and those were chapters that hit hard for me in a good way. Really thought provoking and stirring. Same with the chapter about the art vs the artist. But as a Hannah Gadsby stan I will fight over that chapter lol but not all the chapters do that so I couldn’t bring myself to give it higher rating than I did. If you are fans of her podcast (Normal Gossip) and/or you have not done much reading about psychology and the human mind, I think you will enjoy this book more than I did!
