Wolfsong: A Green Creek Novel (Green Creek, 1)

Wolfsong is the beginning of the Green Creek Series, the beloved fantasy romance sensation by New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune, about love, loyalty, betrayal, and family.

“Wolfsong is so well written that I'm in awe of TJ Klune's talent.” —Charlaine Harris

The Bennett family has a secret: They're not just a family, they're a pack. Wolfsong is Ox Matheson's story.

Oxnard Matheson was twelve when his father taught him a lesson: Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then his father left.

Ox was sixteen when the energetic Bennett family moved in next door, harboring a secret that would change him forever. The Bennetts are shapeshifters. They can transform into wolves at will. Drawn to their magic, loyalty, and enduring friendships, Ox feels a gulf between this extraordinary new world and the quiet life he’s known, but he finds an ally in Joe, the youngest Bennett boy.

Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his heart. Violence flared, tragedy split the pack, and Joe left town, leaving Ox behind. Three years later, the boy is back. Except now he’s a man – charming, handsome, but haunted – and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.

The Green Creek Series is for adult readers.

Gay twilight but werewolves. Really took off in the second half which made up for the dragging in the first half. Ultimately sweet once you get over the initial age gap.

I loved the first half of this book. I didn’t like the second half at all. Imo the characters suddenly began behaving decidedly ‘ out of character’, the Mother especially. She essentially fell into a grief so deep that she abandoned her family completely. She went from a regal leader and emphatic mother, to a self absorbed persona non grata, more of a lost figure, staying removed and uninvolved, leaving her very young kids to cope as well as they could in dire situations. Throwing them to the wolves (so to speak) So this one was easily one of the most annoying books I have ever read. I actually purchased this book in large paperback. At one point I threw it across the room. I won’t be reading anything else by this self indulgent author.

I really enjoyed this book. I wouldn't say it was perfect, but it had me openly weeping several times... so yeah, it really made me care for the characters which counts for a lot. I understand people's hesitation to read this book because of the rumor it involves grooming, but absolutely nothing happens between these characters until they are well above the age of consent and adulthood. They are friends and they become more. period. I loved this book, but I have no idea how the rest of my book club will feel about it. Should be an interesting conversation!

Overall, "Wolfsong" was an amazing read though I'd have to probably put a warning label on my recommendation to read this novel. It's definitely an ADULT novel. There's a very small section of the book, I could have done without...

That being said, Klune knows how to weave a story and his writing style is always phenomenal. His characters are always complex and he knows how to connect his readers to his characters in a very real way. I gave it four stars because as I said, a section of this novel felt slightly forced and unnecessary ~ almost placed for sheer shock value ~ it really didn't add much for me as a reader. Just my little o'l opinion, take it or leave it. The beauty of reading, am I right?
