With a Vengeance: A Novel

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A haunted past. A train with no stops. Thirteen hours to reckon with the truth.

In 1954, Anna Matheson boards a luxury overnight train bound for Chicago that she’s commissioned, along with a list of names and a heart hardened by loss. Twelve years earlier, during the height of World War II, six people shattered her family’s life. Now, under a false guise, Anna has orchestrated a chilling reunion—trapping each of them aboard.

Her plan is precise: confront the ghosts of her past, unearth long-buried truths, and ensure justice is waiting at journey’s end. But when one of the passengers is found murdered before dawn, it becomes clear that Anna isn't the only one harboring secrets—or seeking revenge.

As the train hurtles into the icy night, Anna must navigate layers of deception, reckon with the cost of vengeance, and come to protect the very people she came to condemn. Because someone on board is determined that none of them—Anna included—reach the final stop alive.

I was completely hook!

With a Vengeance is the 2nd book I have read by Riley Sager and it was completely different from The house across the lake which I failed to enjoy as much as I should have. I just feel Riley Sager’s book are based on adaptation of other writers and this book was no different as it has all the vibes of an Agatha Christie novel.

The plot is a locked room mystery onboard the Philadelphia Phoenix, where Anna and 6 others are an completely empty train to Chicago where Anna has planned to seek revenge against all these who helped kill her brother and destroy her father and family.

The book was fast paced with short chapters and I was completely immersed in it from the start. Although the plot wasn’t original, the writing and the characters were definitely intriguing. As the story progresses there are ample of twist and turns. At times, I thought the plot to be quite predictable and I thought I knew where the plot was headed and who was behind all the murders taking place but each time I was completely surprised.

As a slow reader I was able to flew past this book and this surely gives me a reason to pick up another Riley Sager’s book.

A highly recommended book for you like Agatha Christie book.

As a longtime Riley Sager fan, this one was a bit of a letdown.

This non-stop thriller was incredible! This was my third book by Riley Sager and this one hands down become my number one favorite. I very much enjoyed the story line and the murder mystery aspect of the book. It being on a train just took the cake! I would love to find more books like this to read in the future.

So this book was reallllyyyy slow to start. I was really regretting picking it up then it got interesting .. but only just. It felt like I was reading a new age version of clue! Which was fun at first but quickly became played out. Overall it was just ok. I was excited cause I love Sager’s books, but this one was just ok.
