Where Secrets Find Solace

After ten years behind bars, a woman walks free—but freedom comes with its own sentence in this bold and unsparing novel by national bestselling author Kimberly Brown.
After serving a ten-year sentence for killing her mother’s boyfriend, Alayah Chambers is finally free—but freedom comes at a cost. Haunted by the abuse that landed her in prison and judged by a society that still sees her as a criminal, Alayah must piece together a new life in a world that isn’t quick to forgive. Determined to reclaim her future, she sets out to confront the ghosts of her past—including the woman who failed her the most: her own mother.
Killian Lake, a successful attorney and Alayah’s childhood friend, never forgot her—or the signs he missed back then. When a colleague offers him the chance to help overturn Alayah’s conviction, he doesn’t hesitate. Reunited after years apart, the chemistry between them simmers beneath the surface. And while Alayah keeps her heart guarded, Killian’s steady support begins to chip away at her defenses.
As buried secrets emerge and old wounds resurface, Alayah must choose: Will she let her past define her future or embrace the love and justice she’s always deserved? With Killian by her side, healing is within reach—but only if she’s willing to claim it.

This was a heartfelt and redemptive story.
Alaya was abused in the worst way, and when she protected herself, she was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment. Unmerciful!
Thankfully, a group of attorneys worked on her behalf to get her an early release. Once out, we follow her as she reaclimate with the support of family and rebuild bonds that were severed.
I genuinely enjoyed this story, especially the characters—you can’t help but root for many of them. Alaya has been dealt an incredibly difficult hand, so it was rewarding to watch her life begin to turn around, particularly in rebuilding her relationship with her sisters.
I also loved Killian. His steady support and care for Alaya added so much warmth to the story. The “found family” element was especially touching. That said, I did find it a bit odd that their first intimate moment happened in a house full of family celebrating…
The only thing that I missed was closure on her mother, and her reasoning for why she treated Alaya so poorly. What was the story behind the dad? Why couldn’t she ever humble herself and change her heart? Also, I would’ve liked more behind the investigation into why Alaya received such a harsh sentence to begin with.
I like how Kimberly writes a good balance of women’s fiction and romance. Seems here she took the “you’ve suffered enough, you won’t have to hurt anymore” approach with Alaya’s journey - which is deserved, and understandable - but I would’ve been more interested in seeing her dig deeper to overcome the obstacles that come with reentering the world after incarceration!
The story is very triggering and heartbreaking so proceed was care. The narrators did a fantastic job amplifying the emotions of the characters!!
Heartbreaking but also heartwarming!
This book was ANOTHER great read! The title makes complete sense once you finish. I was turning each page waiting to just understand how the main character would turn out of so much trauma as a child. It’s a must read!

Ms. Kimberly Brown, I need you to come forward, please!
How you take us from a buckle up your seatbelt to a climb up to a climax (yes pun intended) Rollercoaster ride.
I read this book with Audible and I want to give props to the Narrators! With the authors words, they had me feeling like I was right there. Like I wanted to fight, I wanted to comfort, wanted to cry, I wanted to fight again. I really wanted to sit and hug characters. It felt that real!
Yes this book touched on many tough topics, not just the SA, but incarcerated women, injustice, child abuse, PTSD. And author Kimberly Brown kept it real because it is a reality for many. It also shows that if you experienced those things, you can survive and conquer and begin to heal.
Great read!
also if I could ask author a question? what is the significance of the key in the jar of sunflowers
