Voices in the Snow (Black Winter, 1)

From USA Today bestseller and rising queen of atmospheric horror Darcy Coates comes Book 1 in the Black Winter Series. No one escapes the stillness...

This propulsive, suspenseful series is:

  • Perfect for fans of V.C. Andrews and Peng Shepard
  • For lovers of horror and paranormal thrillers

Clare remembers the cold. She remembers abandoned cars and children's toys littered across the road. She remembers dark shapes in the snow and a terror she can't explain. And then... nothing. When she wakes, aching and afraid in a stranger's gothic home, he tells her she was in an accident, a crash in the snow. He claims he saved her. Clare wants to leave, but a vicious snowstorm has blanketed the world in white, trapping them together, and there's nothing she can do but wait.

At least the stranger seems kind... but Clare doesn't know if she can trust him. He promised they were alone here, but she sees and hears things that convince her something else is creeping about the surrounding woods, watching. Waiting. Between the claustrophobic storm and the inescapable sense of being hunted, Clare is on edge... and increasingly certain of one thing:

Her car crash wasn't an accident. Something is waiting for her to step outside the fragile safety of the house... something monstrous, something unfeeling.

Something desperately hungry.

The writing was really great. The story building was also great. However, I did not love the story. It has a very sci-fi feel to it. I continuously thought of how the story could end and I feel like I created a better ending than what the ending was. But again it's just not my cup of tea. I enjoy more haunting type horror which had me hooked to the first three quarters of the book. I understand why some people really love it- It just wasn't for me.

Darcy Coates is one of the authors I go to whenever I need a comfort read. She’s great at crafting supernatural stories with likable characters that I want to succeed. Voices in the Snow is book one in a series about Clare and Doran that find themselves together in a snowed in mansion surviving a sudden deadly storm. Soon they realize that there is much more than just weather and lack of supplies threatening them, but something much more dangerous. I love the mystery here and will be continuing this series to find out what’s going and what happened! I’m a sucker for Clare and Dorran and their interactions were just as fun to read as the action. Looking forward to book two!

What a page turner! I started this book this morning and would have finished it earlier if I hadn’t desperately needed a nap. But I didn’t put this book down all day while conscious. Tried it out on a whim after receiving Darcy’s newsletter and realized somehow this series of hers had slipped beneath my notice. I’m very glad I picked it up and will be immediately moving on to the next installment.

The first half was chilling and atmospheric, mysterious in a “What’s-Up-With-Dorran” kind of way. I thought I was reading Misery by Stephen King. The second half was completely off the rails. Bonkers. Very fun and unexpected horror. Resident Evil Village vibes. I wish that villain had been around for more of it, she was great! Definitely not what I was expecting, but definitely a worthwhile read.

a fast-paced & engaging horror novel. this one was a bit more cliche than coates' normal, with characters making odd decisions to further the plot. as it's book 1 in a series, not much was answered about the origins of the storms or the monsters, but i look forward to book 2 to lend more insight!
