22-year-old Eileen goes missing while hiking in the remote Ashlough Forest. Five days later, her camera is discovered washed downriver, containing bizarre photos taken after her disappearance.

Chris wants to believe Eileen is still alive. When the police search is abandoned, he and four of his friends create their own search party to scour the mountain range. As they stray further into the dark forest and the unsettling discoveries mount, they begin to believe they're not alone in the trees... and that Eileen's disappearance wasn't an accident.

By that point, it's too late to escape.

- started off pretty slow featyring a rather unlikable character, but picked up nicely about 1/4 of the way through
- highly engaging mystery that felt almost like a TV show, as each chapter ended on a cliffhanger before moving on to another subplot
- twist at the end was unexpected
- some parts were genuinely horrifying, given the premise!

The ending was a huge twist! It was nice to read something from Darcy Coates where the antagonist was a real human being and not a spiritual entity. I also appreciated that this one is longer than some of her other reads so it allowed for multiple storylines.
