I think I was expecting something more sophisticated, but it seems this was meant for late elementary school/early middle school, rather than roughly the same audience as Harry Potter or Fablehaven. It felt a bit...cliche. It simply happened to be useful that she could turn into a winged dragon-kitten, and that everyone's wonky magic saved the day. It seemed like an un-nuanced lesson that she couldn't simply be "normal" if she wanted to, and that to be wonky was inevitable, and to suppress it was bad. She doesn't go to the school she wanted to go to, even if her power was impressive and she was able to control it well enough to save a classmate. It felt like inescapable essentialism enforced by her social environment. I don't think the status quo was really challenged. Of course, I did read this a few months ago, so I might be missing some details.
