“I just love the world of Patrick Rothfuss.” —Lin-Manuel Miranda

DAY TWO: THE WISE MAN’S FEAR

“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale told from his own point of view—a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, an escalating rivalry with a powerful member of the nobility forces Kvothe to leave the University and seek his fortune abroad. Adrift, penniless, and alone, he travels to Vintas, where he quickly becomes entangled in the politics of courtly society. While attempting to curry favor with a powerful noble, Kvothe uncovers an assassination attempt, comes into conflict with a rival arcanist, and leads a group of mercenaries into the wild, in an attempt to solve the mystery of who (or what) is waylaying travelers on the King's Road.

All the while, Kvothe searches for answers, attempting to uncover the truth about the mysterious Amyr, the Chandrian, and the death of his parents. In The Wise Man's Fear, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Really wonderful twists and turns, but am not rushing out to get volume three of the trilogy.

Not as good as the first; I’m definitely not among the many readers who can’t wait for the third. There are parts of this that are good. But I can’t find any reason they need to be wrapped up into such a lengthy tome; they would stand better on their own as short stories or novellas. More importantly, I simply couldn’t stomach any more of the misogyny & softcore that take up so much space here. It’s tedious, at best. Worth finishing, but I’m glad I’m done with it.

Kvothe matures as a character and explores more of the Rothfuss world. This book is every bit as entertaining as the first one, but with more magic, history, and philosophy. I eagerly await the next book. :)

95% of this tome was read in 2021 but seeing I’ve now set myself a challenge of 48 books this year it’s fortuitous that I completed this in 2022.

I loved this book - even more than the first. Is it materially any better? Probably not but I am familiar with the world now and hungry for more of Kvothe’s story. I also have accepted the pace of the book - it’s the meanderings of someone’s life. Slowly told, unfurling and the good / bad and ugly told in the same way.

I really appreciate the immersion into a completely different world. It’s incredibly absorbing and yes I’m now hooked. Have officially joined the rabid crew waiting for the next instalment.
